Please, go directly to post #6
Initial title : cloning a system with duplicate hardware fails. How to do it
New title : udev does not start at boot time

Hi,
I need to clone my gentoo desktop on a second identical hardware - not completely identical :
- one hard disk instead of two - so I adapted the fstab
- video card from same vendor (nvidia), same family, just more RAM - I did nothing
- CPU with a bit higher fraquency - I did nothing
I used rsync -a from the boot DVD to clone my system on an external storage, and another rsync -a on the new hardware - after having prepared the disk of course.
I changed the network configuration and the hostname. I wrote the MBR from Grub. That's all, and reboot.
I have some errors during booting, then I get xdm and I can enter my username & password, and finally press OK to login. Then, the X server freezes.
Any clue ?
What would be the best way / protocol to clone a system ?

what are the boot errors?

you might try rebuilding the nvidia-drivers ...

A straight copy, with tar or rsync, has always worked for me. At a guess it's
some small change in the new hardware.

Thanks cwr, but it does not solve the problem.
I checked the video card :
PC1 (nominal) :
Code:
           *-display
                description: VGA compatible controller
                produit: G92 [GeForce GTS 240]
                fabriquant: nVidia Corporation
                identifiant matériel: 0
                information bus: pci@0000:01:00.0
                version: a2
                bits: 64 bits
                horloge: 33MHz
fonctionnalités: pm msi pciexpress vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom
                configuration: driver=nvidia latency=0
                ressources: irq:16 mémoire:fa000000-faffffff mémoire:d0000000-dfffffff mémoire:f8000000-f9ffffff portE/S:dc00(taille=128) mémoire:fbde0000-fbdfffff

PC2 (duplicate) :
Code:
           *-display UNCLAIMED
                description: VGA compatible controller
                product: nVidia Corporation
                vendor: nVidia Corporation
                physical id: 0
                bus info: pci@0000:01:00.0
                version: a1
                width: 64 bits
                clock: 33MHz
                capabilities: pm msi pciexpress vga_controller bus_master cap_list
                configuration: latency=0

from the Vendor, PC2 has a "PCI Express Nvidia GeForce GTS 240 1024 Mb". So the only difference are the version : a1 versus a2, and one less capability : rom. BTW,
is it normal to have : "display UNCLAIMED" ?

Here are the :

- Xorg.0.log : http://pastebin.com/K8Fuw2C0

Note : 2.6.30 is the version of the kernel of the live DVD, the one of the two PC is 2.6.37

I rebuilt everything. No change. It seems the problem does not come from the video drivers : xdm is waiting for cupsdxdm, tty1 is waiting as tty7, tty2 to 4 are not available.
Code:
xdm: waiting for cupsd (5 seconds)
xdm          |local          |nfs          |  *     *     *  local: timed out waiting for cupsdxdm:    timed out waiting for cupsdnfs:    timed out waiting for cupsd

From the chrooted environment (but I am not sure this is relevant from chroot since boot is from live DVD) :
Code:
# rc-status sysinit
Runlevel: sysinit
 dmesg                                                                                 [  stopped  ]
 udev                                                                                  [  stopped  ]
 devfs                                                                                 [  stopped  ]

Otherwise :
Code:
(chroot) livecd / # /etc/init.d/dmesg status
 * status: stopped
(chroot) livecd / # /etc/init.d/udev status
 * status: stopped
(chroot) livecd / # /etc/init.d/devfs status
 * status: stopped

Let's try to start them :
Code:
(chroot) livecd / # /etc/init.d/devfs start

udev                      | * start-stop-daemon: /sbin/udevd is already running               [ !! ]
udev                      | * ERROR: udev failed to start
(chroot) livecd / # /etc/init.d/dmesg start
(chroot) livecd / # rc-status sysinit
Runlevel: sysinit
 dmesg                                                                                 [  started  ]
 udev                                                                                  [  stopped  ]
 devfs                                                                                 [  started  ]

That looks right - udev does not start here for good reasons.

So why does udev refuse to start on boot ?

EDIT :
Code:
