|
|
Hi
I went through every steps in installing Gentoo without any noticeable problems, but when I reboot after the kernel is compiled, I select my linux installation in GRUB and then I get:
Booting 'kag's gentoo palace'
root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /boot/bzImage root=/dev/hda3
[Linux-bzImage, setup=0xa00, size=0xc451a]
When GRUB loads, it says "GRUB Loading stage1.5."
I read the other threads and I compiled my kernel again, twice. The first time, I made sure it was Pentium MMX and it didnt change anything. Then I realised that I had not cleaned the src directory, so I re-compiled it after doing what was said on https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=7723&highlight=reboot+grub
So right now I'm caught in that loop and I don't want to throw away the time I put on installing Gentoo to install Slackware.
Do you have any suggestions? |

Sorry, what loop is that you're referring to? Immediate reboot before your kernel finishes loading? What is the model of your CPU? You can use delta407's install cd rescue procedure to get back in and fix things. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

i dont know if its before or after the kernel boots, im a linux n00b

It sure sounds like a kernel CPU setting / actual CPU mismatch. What is the CPU setting in your kernel configuration, and what is your actual CPU? _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

i have a pentium I 166mmx and the processor is set as Pentium-MMX in the "make menuconfig" thing .. it runs on the intel 430tx.. i dunno if it needs special modules loaded for it |

I just finished installing on a Pentium 200 MMX and I get the same thing. It's setup for pentium classics. Grub comes up, I hit enter, screen goes black as if to begin loading, then the machine reboots. I'm stumped. I installed it on this machine as a test install to make sure I could get through it ok.
Any ideas?
Thanks. _________________ RickySilk

Instead of Pentium-Classic, have you tried anything else? Such as Pentium-MMX, 586/K5/5x86/6x86/6x86MX, 486, or even 386? _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Am I wrong to assume the the example in make.conf under the heading Pentium/Pentium MMX+ would work with a pentium 200 mmx? _________________ RickySilk

My bad. I should have been more clear. I was referring to options under 'make menuconfig'. Under 'Processor type and features --->' there is an option that will look similar to '(Your chosen option here) Processor family'. The "Your chosen option here" should tell you what your kernel is configured for. Alternatively, you can 'select' this one, and will see another menu of options. _________________ Quis separabit?
