I've been trying to install the latest kernel since it was released yesterday. I've successfully compiled the new kernel and can boot into an (almost) fully working system, just as with 2.4.20 - the only problem is that both my network card and sound are not working.

I'm a beginner to this compile your own kernel game, but I've been through all of the options in "make menuconfig" quite a few times and I think I've compiled the new kernel about 10 times with slightly different options but still no luck resolving these issues.

The network card is a Netgear model and the sound card is the motherboard's on-board sound, it's a C-Media make. I have definitely enabled the drivers for both of these in the kernel options. Looking at the KDE "info center" (yes I'm still used to windows based GUI debugging!!) and it appears both the network card and sound card are disabled under 2.6.0 and don't have any IRQ assigned. Under the working 2.4.20 kernel both of these work and are given IRQs 19 and 17 respectively.

Below is a copy of "/var/log/messages" after booting the new kernel...

Anyone know what's going on...? I'm very puzzled, but I really want to 'crack' this new kernel.
Oh and one more thing, when I try to shutdown from 2.6.0 it doesn't power off the pc completely after shutting down. strange!

Thanks for any help :D

You said to you are new to compiling kernels...just to make sure, you did rm -rf /usr/src/linux and create a new symlink to the beta kernel, right? Sorry, I don't mean to insult your intelligence. :P

Sorry, I just scrolled up and see the 2.6.0-test10 kernel label.
To make sure you are using the correct modules/drivers, try this:

Code:
root@fux0red syn # lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corp. 82815 815 Chipset Host Bridge and Memory Controller Hub (rev 11)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corp. 82815 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] (rev 11)
00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corp. 82801BAM/CAM PCI Bridge (rev 03)
00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corp. 82801BAM ISA Bridge (LPC) (rev 03)
00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corp. 82801BAM IDE U100 (rev 03)
00:1f.2 USB Controller: Intel Corp. 82801BA/BAM USB (Hub #1) (rev 03)
00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corp. 82801BA/BAM SMBus (rev 03)
00:1f.4 USB Controller: Intel Corp. 82801BA/BAM USB (Hub #2) (rev 03)
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio (rev 03)
00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corp. Intel 537 [82801BA/BAM AC'97 Modem] (rev 03)
01:00.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Texas Instruments TSB43AA22 IEEE-1394 Controller (PHY/Link Integrated) (rev 02)
01:02.0 CardBus bridge: Ricoh Co Ltd RL5c476 II (rev 80)
01:02.1 CardBus bridge: Ricoh Co Ltd RL5c476 II (rev 80)
01:08.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corp. 82801BA/BAM/CA/CAM Ethernet Controller (rev 03)
root@fux0red syn #

It's possible you are usin the wrong modules.

Thanks for your help, I'll give that a go when I'm home from work this evening, I hope it is an easy to fix modules problem! Oh and yes I did create the symlink to the new kernel, /usr/src/linux -> /usr/src/linux-2.6.0-test1 (can't remember exact name now!).

I've just tried the "lspci" command on the new 2.6.0 kernel (and compared it with my working 2.4.20 kernel). The output was identical on both:
Code:
bash-2.05b# lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-760 MP [IGD4-2P] System Controller (rev 11)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-760 MP [IGD4-2P] AGP Bridge
00:07.0 ISA bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-768 [Opus] ISA (rev 05)
00:07.1 IDE interface: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-768 [Opus] IDE (rev 04)
00:07.3 Bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-768 [Opus] ACPI (rev 03)
00:10.0 PCI bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-768 [Opus] PCI (rev 05)
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE]
02:00.0 USB Controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-768 [Opus] USB (rev 07)
02:04.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10)
02:08.0 Ethernet controller: National Semiconductor Corporation DP83815 (MacPhyter) Ethernet Controller

Any other suggestions - the only PCI card plugged in to the motherboard is the network card, plug an ATI Radeon 7000 AGP graphics card, the sound is on-board I'm going to go back and re-read the kernel upgrade guide and follow it to the letter. Progress report later!

...an update! Well I recompiled the kernel after reading the guide on kerneltrap thoroughly, and going through every one of the options in "make menuconfig", then did "make && make modules_install". I don't know if this is a problem or not, but at the end of compiling the kernel produced the following:
Code:
(....previous lines removed for clarity!)
INSTALL drivers/scsi/sr_mod.ko
  INSTALL fs/udf/udf.ko
  INSTALL drivers/usb/storage/usb-storage.ko
  INSTALL drivers/usb/core/usbcore.ko
  INSTALL fs/vfat/vfat.ko
  INSTALL net/xfrm/xfrm_user.ko
if [ -r System.map ]; then /sbin/depmod -ae -F System.map  2.6.0-test10-gentoo-r1; fi

Rebooted the kernel and oops, I removed devfs which gentoo requires. Anyway the network card still doesn't work - but I realised that the driver I need is "National Semiconductor Corporation DP83815" (even though I had just included every network card driver previously).

Anyway, the error messages produced on boot in full is:
Code:
* Bringing eth0 up...
SCOCSIFFLAGS: Device or resource busy
* Setting default gateway
SIOCADDRT: network is unreachable
* Failed to bring eth0 up
* Bring eth0 down

Damn!

Similar problem here http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/113273
and here http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5491&view=previous
I'm going to try the suggestion of disabling PnP ij the BIOS and see what happens....

Success....! I now have the network card working, eth0, by disabling "PnP OS" in the bios...result.
Code:
bash-2.05b$ uname -a
Linux silentbob 2.6.0-test10-gentoo-r1 #6 SMP Wed Nov 26 23:38:29 GMT 2003 i686 AMD Athlon(TM) MP 2000+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

:D :D
Now I just need to get the sound card working with ALSA and I'll be sorted!

Ta'rah
