Hello,
not sure why, but my X.Org X server 1.9.5 freezes when using KDE-effects (like Wobbly Windows) with the following message:
syslog:
| Code: | | [ 547.189324] NVRM: Xid (0000:07:00): 13, 0001 00000000 00008397 000015e0 00000000 00000100 |
xorg.log:
| Code: | [ 623.923] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to allocate 2D engine
[ 623.923] (EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
[ 623.923] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to allocate 2D objects

[ 623.924] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Error recovery failed.
[ 623.924] (EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***

Versions:
x11-base/xorg-server: 1.9.5
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers: 270.41.06
kde-base/kde-meta: 4.6.3
Worked fine for month, but after some updates it freezes sometimes :/
Thanks _________________ Salem |

Probably best to find the versions that worked and start reporting bugs on the versions that don't
Side note: The nouveau driver is starting to get decent for some uses, perhaps it's worth giving it a try. |

Yeah, testing atm. But not sure if its a nvidia, X or kde problem :/ _________________ Salem |

Upgraded to the latest xorg-server-1.10.2 and it still freezes. Then I downgraded to 1.9.5 and now everything works fine...
Thanks =) _________________ Salem |

Sometimes when certain software is updated, you also have to update other things that work with it. For example here, a newer nvidia driver might work better with the updated X server (there's a 270.41.19 nvidia drivers in unstable compared to the 270.41.6 you're on)
Maybe worth checking at least. And of course if it doesn't work, it's probably better to file a bug report now than later, before all the working versions get pushed out of portage! |

Yeah, true. But still not sure what's wrong here.
I still have random freezes while playing Flash animations and the flash plugin crashes many times per day. But the rest is working fine atm :/
While freezing, i can sometimes move the mouse cursor for half a second and the full picture goes blackfor a millisecond. I have no problem playing (3d) games or playing videos with a video player...
Could be a flash problem...i hope.
Here the log while freezing:

I'd really give nouveau a shot, just to see if it's a viable option for your setup. I've had good luck during the (limited) amount I used it.
Otherwise I really don't know what's causing those problems... I suppose if you had an identical card you could test the hardware, or see if it works better in another OS (even ubuntu or something). It'd just suck to waste effort on it if the card itself is getting flaky. |
