I have the same problem as was discussed there -> https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-6295101.html
except that "Large files and block devices" are enabled in my kernel.

dmesg
Code:
EXT4-fs (sda2): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
VFS: Mounted root (ext4 filesystem) readonly on device 8:2.
Freeing unused kernel memory: 396k freed
Write protecting the kernel text: 4244k
Write protectiong the kernel read-only data: 1664k
init-early.sh used greatest stack depth: 6696 bytes left

grub
Code:
default 0
timeout 10

title Gentoo
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.37-gentoo-r4 root=/dev/sda2 raid=noautodetect rootfstype=ext4

fstab
Code:

/dev/sda1    /boot     ext3     noauto,noatime   1 2
/dev/sda2    /         ext4     noatime          0 1
/dev/sda3    none      swap     sw               0 0

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-879347-postdays-0-postorder-asc-start-0.html refers.
It may be that you need to change kernel config to include:
Quote:
Device Drivers --->
Generic Driver Options --->
(/sbin/hotplug) path to uevent helper
[*] Maintain a devtmpfs filesystem to mount at /dev
[*] Automount devtmpfs at /dev, after the kernel mounted the rootfs
[*] Select only drivers that don't need compile-time external firmware
[*] Prevent firmware from being built
-*- Userspace firmware loading support
[ ] Include in-kernel firmware blobs in kernel binary
() External firmware blobs to build into the kernel binary
[ ] Driver Core verbose debug messages
[ ] Managed device resources verbose debug messages
and mount /boot and recompile and recopy the kernel.

Its normal to see the message "Mounted root (ext4 filesystem) readonly", and is ill-advised to change this without knowing what youre doing.

The line that we need to see will say something similar to "Unable to mount / on unknown block device" or "Unable to mount unknown filesystem on block (0,1)" or such.

While

are all normal outputs during boot; having the process then hang is not normal.

Thanks a lot! This solved the problem.

True, it saved me after multiple kernel recompilations. Thanks guys!
Enabling Large file support in the linux kernel allowed the ext4 filesystem to mount read-write.

Cheers,
-Nik
