Xorg not recognizing graphics card [SOLVED]

  • Quote

Post by Kadath » Thu May 26, 2011 8:23 pm

I just installed gentoo on a spare computer, (due to my main being broken) and no matter what i try X11 crashes with "No devices detected".

I have a Nvidia 6800; relevant lspci:
http://pastebin.ca/2069608

My xorg.conf:
http://pastebin.ca/2069609

Xorg crash log:
http://pastebin.ca/2069611

when replacing "nvidia" with "fbdev" in xorg.conf, x11 works. Not "vesa" though.
Tried downgrading the kernel & nvidia-drivers a release, to no improvement.

Please help! "links" in terminal mode is getting somewhat annoying ;)

possible to chunk your kernel .config up on pastebin?
Lost configuring your system?
dump lspci -n here | see Pappy's guide | Link Stash

Code: Select all

emerge wgetpaste
wgetpaste /usr/src/linux/.config
(just in case you weren't aware of that already and had some long complicated way of doing it planned ;) )

Are you sure the graphic card is at PCI:1:0:0? Have you tried with a minimal xorg.conf, containing just the Device section? Is the nvidia module loaded, and if not, does dmesg say anything interesting when you attempt to load it?

It doesn't work even with PCI:1:0:0 removed. I think xorg.conf has nothing to do with the problem actually, due to the fact that X -configure fails with "no devices to configure" even when there's no xorg.conf.

Nvidia module is loaded (you can see that it gets loaded in the xorg crash log).

dmesg when i reload it with modprobe: http://pastebin.ca/2069638

I don't think 6800 is supported by newest nvidia drivers (they drop support for older chips as they progress). Install nvidia-drivers-173.x.x

Tried 173.14.30, didn't work. :(

Also, nvidias driver download page tells me that the 6-series is supported.

Ah, i fixed it myself.

Turned out udev wasn't started at boot, and that's why x11 couldn't find the card.

Regardless, thank you for your help! :D

That was easy, fortunately. I guess you can mark the topic as [Solved] (edit the subject line)
