OK, sorry, but that's just a piss-poor bug report. Config files? Error output? Any sort of troubleshooting information whatsoever?
As it stands, your message does nothing to help track down whatever issue you might be facing. _________________ The problem with political jokes is that they get elected |

I just installed gentoo - using the xfs kernel (2.4.1
when I went to install the nvidia drivers (per diretions) some message kept popping up and saying that as of April 22 there was a change to the organizational etc ....
At the very end of this message there was mention of kernel 2.4.19.
Now - from what I can see - kernel 2.4.19 is the kernel being used for 'gentoo-sources' which apparently the nvidia drivers are 'looking for' ? maybe? But, since I'm using xfs - I can only have the source for the xfs enabled kernel which is 2.4.18. Once I download the gentoo-sources and see that it is 2.4.19 - I also discover that there is now way to enable xfs in this particular source tree. My solution was to go to nvidia.com download the sources, run make install in both, edit the XF86config file and - done.
Not a big deal -- just a little confusing. |

Using gentoo-source-2.4.19:
oak# emerge nvidia-kernel

thats the error i was getting (using 2.4.19)...
i dont really new 3d but having proper drivers is always nice.
its actually probably an nvidia problem though, i remember how some drivers broke when newer kernels came out and they fixed them... |

The bummer is that I have a GeForce 4 Ti4400 and the "standard"
XFree86 Nvidia driver does not work with it...
I suppose I could download the source from Nvidia and see if compiling it
manually works - will this break Portage or cause me problems in future? |

i just tried the 2802 kernel driver and got the same error with PAGE_SHARED being undefined. i suspect this has something to do with the new gentoo-sources kernel source ebuild. are you using the gentoo-sources linux kernel, too? if i get a chance, i will try another kernel and see if that fixes it. _________________ burzmali

Yeah - using gentoo-sources-2.4.19
I tried the two previous driver version in Portage and got the same error.
Let us know how you go with a different kernel. |

It's the 2.4.19-gentoo kernel... I just compiled the 2.4.18 (vanilla-sources) kernel and the nvidia drivers work fine. |

Yup, I have problems with the Nvidia kernel too. Not really sure what's happening to it... I start with a stage3 install, reboot, install X, then I configured X and:
emerge media-video/nvidia-kernel
I did this a couple days ago and the driver installed without a hitch what so ever. I did this today (reinstall) and it fails. It looks like emerge is downloading 2.4.18 kernel sources, patching them to 2.4.19 and then installing the driver. I already boot from a bare 1.1a install which uses the 2.4.19 kernel anyway so I wonder if this step is nessicary.
I noticed then after that the driver was located in an odd place. It had been installed to /lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo/kernel/video/NVdriver. When perhaps it should have been installed to /lib/modules/2.4.19-r1/kernel/video/NVdriver.
When I tried to move it to where the rest of my modules are kept (/lib/modules/2.4.19-r1/...) and tried insmod & modprobe NVdriver it returned unresolved symbols and failed to load. Maybe I did something wrong? I don't know, but I find it odd that 2.4.18 is being downloaded and patched to 2.4.19 when there's a 2.4.19 kernel already installed.
Sorry if the information in this post is useless/incomplete/incorrect, I'm pretty new to linux. But I hope it helps anyway.

Dr sez this
This is caused by an incompatibilty with a part of grsecurity.
The crack gentoo team is working on it and have posted a workaround.
You can disable the relevant part of grsecurity or just turn the whole thing off?
See the bug report:
