Hello. I'm trying to install Gentoo on my iBook G4 with Power PC G4 (1.5GHz) processor. It boots to the CD fine, then gives me the boot prompt, at which I hit enter. It loads the kernel, but then when it loads RAMdisk, it gives me this code -

Code:

Please wait, loading kernel...
    EIf64 kernel loaded...
Loading ramdisk...
ramdisk loaded at 02100000, size: 3660 Kbytes

Invalid memory access at    %SRR0: 01408304     %SRR1: 00083030

Apple PowerBook6,7 4.9.3f0 BootROM built on 07/05/05 at 11:14:11

Welcome to Open Firmware, the system time and date is: 04/14/2011 06:30:50

To continue booting, type "mac-boot" and press return.
To shut down, type "shut-down" and press return.
Reducing system power...

So I figure "what the hell" and type "mac-boot" anyway, and then I get this -

Code:

Decrementer exception at     %SRR0:  05616dc     %SRR1:  00003030
  ok
0>_

So I type mac-boot again, and it goes to a screen where it shows the graphic of a folder with an alternating question mark and the Mac "finder" face.

Any ideas?

its trying to load the 64bit kernel ( which is the default), you should load the 32 bit one: just type ppc32 and hit enter.

cheers

OK so I've got Gentoo installed and working on my iBook G4. Anyone know how to eject the CD on a fresh install of Gentoo on these machines? On Mac OS X the F12 key was the eject key but that doesn't seem to work.

Also, the Gentoo Installation Guide in the PPC handbook needs some serious updating. In the manual it tells you to enter "Apple" at the boot prompt along with any option statements to pass to the kernel (such as 'video="" or whatever). Not only does "apple" not work anymore, but if you instead press "Enter" to boot to the default kernel, they have the CD defaulting to boot from a 64 bit kernel, which the manual makes no mention of, which means it also does not mention needing to type in "ppc32" for booting 32 bit PPC machines. As you can see above, I ended up having to come onto the forums and post the issue I was having due to this information not being present in the guide. I suspect that as the PPC installation CD has evolved over the years that changes to the CD boot procedure were just never reflected in the manual. Does anyone know who I can get in contact with to have these changes added to the installation guide?

Belay my last...had to emerge the "eject" app. Got the CD out and am currently working on my laptop via SSH from my desktop PC. Everything working like a charm.
