i just finished a fresh install from 1.2 cd lastnight...woke up this morning and configured X and booted into kde...well i forgot to include hid and my mouse didnt work...so no big deal...recompiled the kernel and rebooted expecting the nvidia driver to fail and it didnt...it loaded itself into the new kernel?

i ran startx ...nvidia splash screen appears , mouse worked and that was it....anyone else have this happen?

Did you change kernel versions? If not, the modules should be shared and reused.

Yeah sometimes you need to recompile the 3rd-part modules, sometimes not :P
It might depend on how much did you change your kernel setup since the NVdriver was "compiled".

If it works, it works. if in doubt emerge unmerge nvidia-kernel && emerge nvidia-kernel :D

well i didnt change anything but adding HID for the mouse i had like i said in the post....but i have done as little before and it seemed everytime i needed to emerge the nvidia-kernel again after a kernel compile...i wasnt sure if it had something to do with the newer r1 of the nvidia-kernel...at any rate it was a first for me.

I think it's like this: If you do a modules_install, you'll have to reinstall nvidia and alsa, because they will be removed along with all the other old modules in /lib/modules/<kernel version>/...
If you just compile & install the bzImage part of the kernel, the modules directory will be intact, and you can start X without re-emerging nvidia.
