I installed open-vm-tools on my ~amd64 running under VMWare vSphere 4.1, per the very helpful guide.
Code:
 * Messages for package app-emulation/open-vm-tools-kmod-0.0.20110223.368700-r1:
 * vmxnet3 for Linux is now upstream (as of Linux 2.6.32)
 * pvscsi for Linux is now upstream (vmw_pvscsi) (as of Linux 2.6.33)
 * vmmemctl for Linux is now upstream (vmw_balloon) (as of Linux 2.6.34)

I am compiling in all of the above modules to 2.6.38. Given the file list below, should/can I remove open-vm-tools-kmod, so vmxnet.ko will not conflict with the kernel 2.6.38 compiled-in version? Or is vmxnet.ko not the same as vmxnet3?
Code:
# equery files open-vm-tools-kmod

Thanks.
