I use a DirecWay 2-way satellite system for Internet access and 95+% of the time my 'emerge rsync' times out. Most of the time it happens at the very beginning "building file list.....". I have tried using a squid proxy cache server from a server of mine based on a T1 (after adding the rsync port to the list of safe ports) but it returns:
bad response from proxy - HTTP/1.0 403 Forbidden
rsync: failed to connect to x.x.x.x: Success
x.x.x.x is the address of my server
Is there any way to update my package list other than through rsync? My external server is currently Slackware but will soon be Gentoo.

Yes -- use this script which downloads the daily portage snapshot and untars it to the right location. I use it on my Gentoo machine at work -- it works great.

Thank you for the script! It works perfectly! It or an equiv should be included in the gentoolkit.. |
