|
|
Hey this is my 2nd gentoo install but my first dual boot attempt.
I already have windows xp on my pc on ide0 part1 (NTFS)
i tried to install gentoo on a partition on ide1.
Everything went fine of course until the grub part. I basically chikened out because i didnt want to screw up my XP boot sector.
Question: is it possible to use grub even though my ide0 part1 is NTFS? Will writing to the boot sector screw it up?
If it does can it be repaired and how?
-----------------
I am able to get into my half-ass gentoo install by booting to the install cd then mounting my gentoo install /dev/hda6 then chrooting over too it.
Question: What am i actually doing here? Im I using the kernel from the cd but using my install as root?
I have also tried the following with limited success:
Boot to install cd then type...
BOOT: kernel /boot/bzImage root=/dev/hda6
this seems to boot to my install but eth0 is not found and I can't configure my network. Mouse and xserver probs too.
Any pointers? |

Run Grub, overwrite your Windows MBR (the XP install CD can bring it back by pressing R at the menu), and edit your menu.lst accordingly. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |
