I didn't add myself to the wheel. Logged in as a normal user, got stuck in a console where I couldn't shutdown my computer or change to root....then pulled the plug on my machine....did the exact same thing again...................... And not once did I think to type logout
If you just wanted to shut down the computer you should usually be able to hit the power switch which'll trigger the ACPI event for sending it into a normal shutdown sequence.

Doesn't work on my comp...I tried that first...then decided to crawl under my desk and unplug it

Good plan.

New machine, new job, brand new Gentoo install. The last thing I always think about is the sound card. So after a day configuring and compiling I decided to test out the sound card. I had no mp3s or cds so I decided to listen to a little static.

Code:
cat /dev/urandom >> /dev/dsp

The only problem was that I typed in:
Code:
cat /dev/urandom >> /dev/sda

Tip: You can write to /dev/dsp without root privileges.

New system not booting, no errors. Only the grub prompt.

Forgot to make an active partition (hey, I don't often have a brand new HD!).

Does locking the door with the key inside count? (Or is this only about computers?)

I do it every other day.

Wow. I've done it, but it created a near obsessive compulsion to make sure I have my keys with me before leaving. If a door is about to close and I think I've forgotten to check, a tiny wave of panic sets in for a brief moment while I see if I have my keys.

When I'm going out, I'm almost always carrying a lot of stuff like helmet, backpack, keys to my motorcycle, gloves and lot more. By the time I reach the door I'm feeling smug that I carried all of my stuff with me.

The panic and all other checks sets in immediately after I close the door. D'ooooooooh!!

During the week-end, I decided to remove windows on my netbook and put some flavor of linux on it. The last one I tried was the desktop version of ubuntu (the netbook edition sucks for my use). Dumb mistake is I used the installer partitioning tool to create an extended partition. Over 100G of HD left, and it went and made the ENTIRE extended partition (/dev/sda4) 40g, as I asked it to make the volume in it 40g (sda5). Now I can't create more partitions without wiping my install.

So it wasn't the screwing your girlfriend's best friend bit that was stupid, just the telling her about it bit? :P

Yeah.

The first might have been a bad thing to do, but the latter was an epic mistake.

What exactley is the problem? Can't you enlarge the extended partition? In fdisk you have to "delete" it but as long as it starts in the same place and all the logical partitions have the same parameters you're fine.

High risk, high pay-off. You win some, you lose some.

Guess I'll give that a try.

Trusting a contractor when he says he has routed all secondary power cables to the backup UPS only to see all lights on the SAN die after happily flipping the switch on the faulty UPS off and all of this during work hours ... ouch !! :)

Yup and to make things worse I sent an email out prior to work commencing saying there will only be a minor "degradation in performance" ... damn outage took out all 150 users and server access for 10 mins. It took the CEO only 2 mins to get to my door ... but luckily its a one off event and i'm on good terms with management

Ouch. But I sure wouldn't have wanted to be the contractor once you explained the situation.

Another epic fail.

Sending an email to my main client, from a personal account, that was meant for fiction I intended to write about work.
I'm lucky he agreed to forget he ever saw it ...

I wanted to change some file on a filesystem in a zpool in FreeBSD and did it Linux Raid like (mdadm create) "zpool create name /dev/ad20" from a live medium. Now I had two zpools with the same name and same devices, both were "kaputt".

Anyway, was my first install and my first steps into zfs :D

p.s. should have used import...

Allowing that seems like a Dumb Mistake on the developers part.
