Hello,
In an attempt to start partitioning of an AlphaServer, in order to install Gentoo Linux on a second partition, I got into trouble with FDISK v2.12r
Now ABOOT does not recognise a valid partition table anymore. Removing the OpenVMS partition would not be a problem, but I want ultimately both OpenVMS and Gentoo to coexist.
The original partition table was made using OpenVMS, and FDISK was showing the following information prior to start:
Code: | livecd root # fdisk /dev/sda
Detected an OSF/1 disklabel on /dev/sda, entering disklabel mode.
BSD disklabel command (m for help): p
4 partitions:
# start end size fstype [fsize bsize cpg]
a: 6 4101 4096 << Original OpenVMS partition
b: 4102 8197 4096 ext2 << Targeted for Gentoo
c: 8198 10245 2048 swap
d: 10246 35004* 24758* ext2 << Important data useful for the Gentoo installation

In an attempt to bootstrap the harddrive, using the fdisk i command, as follow
Code: | livecd root # cp sda1/boot/bootlx sda1/usr/ucb/mdec/sdboot
livecd root # chroot sda1
sh-3.1# cp usr/ucb/mdec/sdboot usr/ucb/mdec/bootsd
sh-3.1# fdisk /dev/sda
Detected an OSF/1 disklabel on /dev/sda, entering disklabel mode.
BSD disklabel command (m for help): i
Bootstrap: sdboot -> bootsd (sd):
... /usr/ucb/mdec/sdboot
... /usr/ucb/mdec/bootsd
Bootstrap installed on /dev/sda.
Syncing disks.
BSD disklabel command (m for help): q

Question.
How to recover from this fdisk i-command ? I am willing to keep the OSF/1 disklabel, because OpenVMS may get into trouble with the DOS partition table, to which only Linux is compatible.
Many Thanks |

Finaly I could recover the partition of my harddrive.
Luckily, I had the data regarding the placement of the partitions. This is very recommandable to keep the new partition scheme consistant with the scraped partition table. This waz, I did not even loose any data. Great!
So, now I have my BSD partition table back.
Any idea what is this bootstrap command i with FDISK ?
This special modes are not documented in the man pages, and not clarified in the Gentoo Handbook.
Somebody has a clue, is this a replacement for SWRITEBOOT and ABOOTCONF ?
Many thanks |
