Using VMware on a K6 processor running Linux using the suggested k6 make.conf configurations with "use" commented out

I've tried a couple of times to do a stage 1 install. I get to the point where I've started the command:

# emerge rsync

The compile runs for some time then it crashes with the following error:

---- Start of error message ---

Assembler messages:
FATAL : can't create pic/cstringi.o : No such file or directory
cstring1.cc:7: output pipe has been closed

!!! (no error message)

!!! emerge aborting on /usr/portage/sys-devel/gcc/gcc-2.95.3-r7.ebuild.

--- End of error message ---

Any help getting past this is appreciated

Actually I got exactly this error message too when I bootstrapped. Could it possibly be that I'm installing from an older CD image (not 1.2)?

I cannot get hold of a newer CD at the moment, so any help here would be hot!

I am having the same problem. I am booting from a CD image ~3 weeks old (1.2).

I actually had the system up and running for ~2.5 weeks, I crashed it (I had to try gcc3). Now when I try to reinstall from the same CD to the same system. I get this

"FATAL : can't create pic/cstringi.o : No such file or directory
cstring1.cc:7: output pipe has been closed
make[2]: *** [cstringi.o] Error 1
make[2]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
.
.
"

I tried 4 times with and w/o optimizations and adjusting various USE settings. I am at a loss!

Thanks

BAK

I was doing it with a .iso download I did about a week ago, so I don't think your CD is the problem.
