Hi all :D

I was trying to install Gentoo 1.4rc-4 on a SunBlade 100. I was able to get into the SILO prompt and boot the gentoo image.

The system will then uncompress(?) the ramdisk and remap the kernel. Everything is fine until it said Booting Linux... at which it hangs forever.

My system had 1.5GB of ram, and I was hearing that you wouldn't want to begin your installation on a system with more than 512MB of ram ... So can you guys enlighten me with this ? Or is there some other method that I can use... No tftp or rarpd or network install please :D cause I won't be able to find a machine to act as a ftp server.

TIA

You need to use the latest Experimental LiveCDs for Blade support. I don't think the 1.5GBytes of memory will be a problem on Blades, it's only an issue on boxes that officially support no more than 512MBytes.

Thanks ciaranm :D but I wonder if there is any difference between the Experimental LiveCD and the 1.4-rc4 releases ? I download the 1.4-rc4 just 2 weeks ago so I guess it's still quite new... or is there some update that I hadn't heard of ?

The experimental livecds are more recent than rc4. I believe Weeve is planning to release rc5 sometime in the next few days -- afaik this'll be the same experimental cd but with newer stages.

Hi!
I have the same problem on my SunBlade 100. I get the same result even when using the latest experimental release "gentoo-sparc64-1.4_rc5" that was released only some days ago...

At first I did think it was all about the OpenBoot version (before I had 4.10.x), but now I have "downgraded" to version 4.5 but still get the same result... :(

ok boot cdrom

Boot device: /pci@1f,0/ide@d/cdrom@1,0:f File and args:
SILO
-- Welcome to Gentoo SPARC Linux --
...

boot: gentoo
Loading initial ramdisk....

Remapping the kernel.... done
Booting Linux...

After that the CD is very active for a minute or so, the it spins down and everything is quiet and nothing more happens...
