DOOM3 black screen areas

I just emerged DOOM3 and copied my data files from my install DVD as instructed in the emerge output. This is what I get:

Seems like you don't have base files in /opt/doom3/base/

Have you tried copying missing files from disk again?

The files are there. I tried copying them again. I'm still getting the same error.

Using my Windows installation, I created the dir structure require by emerge doom3-data, mounted the partition, set CD_ROOT and now it works. I wonder if there were file perms that were set by emerge doom3-data that a simple cp does not take care of.

Now I'm getting black screen areas on some levels and for some mods (most notably doom3-inhell). Anyone else get black areas that shouldn't be there?

Your files are probably there but do a ls -la and you might notice some thing like thi s needs to be done
chmod -c 640 /opt/doom3/base/pak00[0-4].pk4
chown -c root:games /opt/doom3/base/pak00[0-4].pk4
Can the mind be still? You have to love a good old fashion classical question.

I use Ubuntu and ran into the same file permission issues. The pk4 files I moved from the game discs into the /base directory were set to only be read/written by root. Try running the game as root (ie in ubuntu terminal "sudo doom3") I guess I'm just too lazy to change all those permissions when I can just add sudo every time I open the game :(

Running as root is not a proper solution.

aren't some parts of the game supposed to be rendered as if its complete if not near complete darkness?

Er, yeah, if you're standing right next to an unlit wall, looking at it.

But there's an obviously-noticeable difference between that (shades of dark) and graphics corruption of perfectly square, perfectly black, black squares appearing.

Hell is known to be dark and foreboding, but I've never heard tales of the "black squares of death" :P

I've seen this corruption happen, rarely, in the darkplaces and quake4 engines. Can't remember seeing it in doom3.

Doom3 uses the same engine so it's possible.
