i am about to buy this thing. its delivered with android but i would like to put on some other distro. now the question is would the compile times of gentoo be acceptable? i considered also arch but it does not come with arm support.

further what windows environment would you propose (512mb ram is not much so kde and gnome would not be my choice) considering the 600px vertical screen size.

armin76 has been playing with a tegra2 devboard and has quite a lot of information in his blog, including build times and a howto :

8 gigs isn´t really that much, be careful with your fs choice too.
I would start with a simple wm like fluxbox or sth. similar, try to keep it simple and just play around as soon as you have a minimal X system working.

you can also have a look to this in case you want to test sth., make sure you read the comments :

hope this helps

cheers

muchos gracias gringo :)

according to what i red, the CPU will not be a problem. i dont fear that the hdd space will not be enough as i am planning to use this device for minor internet browsing and so on. but what fs would you propose?

the next question is if the 512mb ram module is enough for compilation. i am thinking about upgrading it directly after the purchase for a 2gb module.

ps: the harddrive should be 16gb in the shop where i checked this machine.

Moved from Kernel & Hardware to Gentoo on Alternative Architectures as it fits better here.

i´m really not sure, maybe some more expert guy can give you better advice than me.
In case you are planning to use a flash device ( not sure if this is your case or not) yaffs2 is being used a lot from what i have been reading. I used ext2 myself a few times for flash drives too and it looks like google is even using ext4 ( without journaling supposedly) in their new 2.3 android series.
If you are going to use a regular hard drive then its up to you i suppose. Interesting would be to have a fs that doesnt suck half of your system resources if the drive is under load.

yeah, do that, i have seen worse things than 512 mbs but if you can have more ram just go for it.

cheers & happy new year to everyone !

well i will have to wait as the shops demand too much for the toy.

interesting is that in german speaking countries there are only 8gb disk versions of the product. in my country there are 16gb and 32 gb alternatives but they demand 100EUR more for this
