Hey!
I've been having this issue as well. I disabled hover tooltips and haven't had a single hang / freeze yet. Maybe this will lead someone down a real "fix" path.

but turning off the information panel does nothing.
the issue manifests when cuting (ctrlX) many files - like more then 1000.

i figured out that its an issue of the icon view (good for working with photos), when using details view everething is just fine.

I get this issue simply hovering over (or attempting to select) files/dirs. That's why I found turning off tooltips to work for me.

Settings --> Configure Dolphin --> General --> Uncheck "Show Tooltips" (near the bottom).

Well, I did just have Dolphin hang even with tooltips off. Yes, it's in icon view... :-\

I put it in Detail View and re-enabled tooltips to see what happened, and it hung hovering over things (dirs and files).
Blah.
KDE3.5* was so much less headache-ful...

Thank you, but that's simply not my issue. I can have Dolphin hang with even just two files in a directory and not doing anything more than hovering my mouse cursor over a file.
