I was wondering if it makes any much of a performance difference if any software I compiled with opengl support needs to be recompiled if I've changed my opengl interface from xfree to nvidia after putting in a new nvidia card from an SiS one. |

Since most of the heavy lifting in OpenGL will happen in the X server and the client libraries for GL are typically dynamically linked, there should be no need to recompile to take advantage of speed ups.
Disclaimer: I have not looked into this deeply, so please take this reply with a chunk of salt. YMMV and all that. |

yeah it does as far as I remember that's why I was asking if it makes any much of a performance difference though it really doesn't matter to me it's just a developement box but still I'm just curious is all |

The OpenGL API in gl.h should conform to the standard. Extensions, etc., would be vendor specific, of course.
Technically, the client does not even have to be running on Linux to be using OpenGL on a Linux X server (it could be a SGI/HP/Alpha... whatever).

i think opengl-update xfree and opengl-update nvidia switches between the two. |

i agree, just opengl-update nvidia or opengl-update xfree86 should do everything you need, no recompiles necessary. |

I have compiled and recompiled xfree and openGL, after comiling my glxgears sped up from around 40fps to 190fps but I still notice that glxinfo tells me dri is not being used. I have load "dri" in xf86config.
My video card is a 3dfx Banshee and a vodoo2 on passthrough, they do what I want so don't really want to get a new card.
Can anyone help with getting dri going? I've read and tried almost all the posts with little luck.
Regards
Tim
