booting with gentoo kernel, no flags.

What media are you using to boot, do you follow the handbook.

I am following the using Minimal Installation CD and following Gentoo Linux x86 Handbook
11/09/2010 12:58PM 119,259,136 install-x86-minimal-20101109.iso

This is a 2008.0 operational system that has been running since ~2004. I want to fresh install.

Still not clear, what do you mean by "install progresses".

What command are you issuing when you get "Attempting to mount media:- /dev/hdc"

Or are you getting this during bootup process?

BTW, hd devices are obsolete, they shouldn't be used.

I boot the minimal install CD and let it go.
it shows a boot: prompt. (So after waiting 10 seconds or so the prompt times out and continues with defaults (I assume))
Next prompt is for Load keymap (Enter for default): (after timeout, it correctly selects 41/us and continues)
Then displays
>> Keeping default keymap
>> Making tmpfs for /newroot
>> Looking for the cdrom
>> Attempting to mount media:- /dev/hda1
>> Attempting to mount media:- /dev/hda2
>> Attempting to mount media:- /dev/hda3
>> Attempting to mount media:- /dev/hdc

and then it just sits.. and sits.. and sits.

I tried booting "gentoo nosata" as well as "gentoo nodetect" and "gentoo nosata nodetect" and several other flag combinations, but no success.
I also realize hda was depreciated but honestly, that is what it displays.

Just use some better CD to boot. I'm surprised official install still tries to load IDE drivers, kind of shows the level of attention it gets.

I had a similar issue and the problem was that the CD-ROM device was plugged in to the tertiary IDE port on the main board.

I moved the device to the primary port and all was well.

hope this helps anyone else with a similar issue on a Dell server.

If you can get another live cd to boot then you can use it to install gentoo. Systemrescuecd might be a better choice.

Good luck
