This message is coming from within GRUB
** root (hd0,0) ***
error message 23 comes after this.
Please take pity on me as this is only the second time I have tried to install Gentoo.
Many thanks |

Well I have been trying and still can't get the thing to work. I unmounted and re-started with the CD. Could you advise the steps I have to take to get it to boot.
Again, thanks for any help given. |

The Grub Manual says this: Quote: | 23 : Error while parsing number
This error is returned if GRUB was expecting to read a number and encountered bad data. |
After reading some results from a Google search, it appears to mean that Grub can't find a disk. I could be wrong.
What do you have for drives (HD, CD, DVD etc.)? What controller are they on? _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

I have SCSI HDs connected to a Adaptec 39160 and a Plex writer 12/10/32 connected to a Adaptec 2930U card. To make things simple I just used one of my hardrives and created 3 Primary partitions as per the instructions. The SCSI bios is booted SCSI ID0 and the MB Bios is set to boot from the SCSI card.
My previous post was wrong I have been putting
** root (sd0,0) *** not (hd0,0) for IDE.
I'm sure it is something quite simple as the rest of the installation went well apart from Grub.
Thanks |

See this page and scroll down a little until you see "The map between BIOS drives and OS devices". That might be related. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |
