PostPosted: Thu Aug 19, 2010 2:31 pm    Post subject: [livecd]Unable to get a prompt via ttyS0 on a SunFire V480. Reply with quote

Hello,

I'm trying to install gentoo with a minimal liveCD (install-sparc64-minimal-20100816.iso) on two SunFires v480 via serial console.
The only card installed is the Sun RSC card, so i have no video out.

Both units behave the same way:

The boot PROM don't give any errors (pasted below).
I can boot the liveCD, but i don't get any prompt after the "* Starting local ... [ ok ]" line.

Following advices from #gentoo-sparc users (thanks), i tried -without success- to boot kernel with parameter console=ttySx (x from 0 to 4), with and without init=/bin/bash.

I'm accessing the server through the only (external) serial console, from a win32 hyperterminal (9600/8-N-1, ANSI).

Any hints on getting a prompt OR automatically starting sshd with a blank/known password?

Regards,
-Laurent.

Here is the full console output:

you need to uncomment the Sx line in /etc/inittab once the livecd is booted and the reload it with 'init q'
(where x is the number of the port you want to use)

otherwise there will be nothing listening on that comp port for your connections via the serial cable.

I had exactly the same issue with a 280R which also had an RSC card in it

Workaround:

Remove the RSC and the livecd boots

I've got a Wyse terminal attached to the serial port so I can use that instead of the RSC

Going to move onto building it and see if I can put the RSC card back in

richard.scott: that inittab line was indeed commented, but i couldn't access to the machine to edit the file.

Removing the RSC card did the trick, thanks JFGI!
