I recently built a new system a Phenom II X6 1055t, so I thought I would recompile the base system.

CFLAGS="-O2 -march=amdfam10 -pipe"
MAKEOPTS="-j7"

Whenever I attempt to rebuild glibc it never finishes and appears that it is stuck in an endless loop. Should emerging glibc take more than 16 hours?

No, not even close. Is it actually generating output, or just stuck somewhere? If it's still printing to the terminal, my guess is some funky dependency-knots in the makefile. Maybe try with a low -j-value (e.g. 1 or 2) in MAKEOPTS?

If it seems to be stuck, I have no idea.

It is actually generating output, and all 6 cores are pegged at 95%+ utilization. It recompiles lowlevellock and a few other items over and over again. I think I may try lowering the clock speed on my cores from 4ghz to 2.8ghz, even though the cpu is running at 35c even during compile. If that doesn't work I will start from scratch, as it is a fresh install.

If it succeeds in compiling them, I suspect lowering the clock speed will only make it go slower, as expected.

Don't worry too much about having to start over on glibc. My old single-threaded laptop finishes it in a couple of hours. 16 is excessive.

any feedbacks on that cpu? I intend to build a multiseat server and I was thinking of getting that cpu.
how does it fares with heavy multitask scenarios?

How long did it take to build OpenOffice 3.2.0 on your mighty six core box? Use genlop to find out, it's a really useful tool for checking build times.
