I have not been able to get boinc to run. (I already have it running on a win computer so I have an account.) The first time I emerged it I changed the password to a blank and then tried to attach using the command line and my account number, but had no luck. So I unmerged it, then re-emereged it and tried the Boinc manager, but there was no gui_rpc_auth.cfg file in /var/lib/boinc - the only file there was the .keep file. I unmerged and re-emerged several more times and tried both versions 6.10.18 and 6.10.36 with the same results.

I tried creating the file using a blank line, but I still could not connect to the localhost. When I do ps x | grep boinc it does not show the boinc-client running.

I really don't want to have to go the the Berkely version, but I also would like to get it to work - I obviously am missing somethinghere.

EDIT: After cleaning the /root/.local/share/Trash/files/ I was able to re-emerge boinc and it wrote the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file as it was supposed to do. I can start the boinc_client, but when I start the Boinc Manager I cannot get it to connect to the localhost (I have a full-time connection to the net via DSL). This is the same problem I had the first time when I used the command line.

Have you restarted boinc_client after changing gui_rpc_auth.cfg?
Do you get any errors in /var/log/boinc.log?

For me, boinc (6.10.36) is working on amd64 and x86 without problems.

check the settings of /etc/conf.d/boinc to see if the user and group are set right
also, check the permissions and owner of /var/lib/boinc.
these two are the main reasons for boinc problems.

Thanks for the replies.

In answer to your questions, I have (according to the BOINC wiki):

Put myself into the boinc group

ln -s /var/lib/boinc/gui_rpc_auth.cfg /home/frank/gui_rpc_auth.cfg

chown boinc:boinc /home/frank/gui_rpc_auth.cfg

chown boinc:boinc /var/lib/boinc/gui_rpc_auth.cfg

chmod -R g+r /var/lib/boinc

The boinc error log says that another instance of boinc is running even though I stop and restart boinc daemon before I try anything.

When I stop and restart tjhe daemon and do a ps aux | grep boinc it shows the boinc client as running.

When I first tried to get this working I tried to attach via the command line, but I kept getting an error message so I unmerged everything and started again. I have 6.10.36 , and even tried the earlier version to no avail.

Did you try
Code:
/etc/init.d/boinc zap
to clear the lockfile?

To wlchase, I tried this with no luck. Don't have a lot of time these days to mess around with this, but the next rainy day I think I will wipe out everything and try again from scratch.
I had been running folding@home on this computer (which is only 2 ghz) for years, but recently they would just leave completed units on and would not upload them so I thought I would give boinc a try.

Thanks for the reply

FWIW, I eventually had to go to the Berkeley version to get it to run.

never had much problems in running boinc compiled, in fact, after the departure of the last boinc maintainer, the official ebuilds in the tree have been gone to frozen again, I use the script made by the last boinc maintainer to get the src from svn and modify the ebuild.
I currently use 6.10.56
