Hi!
Is it possible to mount a NTFS partition as read/write with the Gentoo boot-cd?
I managed to mount it read only but somehow it won't let me mount it read&write.
I know it's dangerous, but we have a crashed W2K machine that just needs one file replaced...so we need to find a way to mount the NTFS partition with write permission.
Any hints? |

Updating boot.ini right? 
I don't have experience with the Gentoo boot CD, but I know quite a bit about NTFS support in linux. When building a kernel, the NTFS write option is marked EXPERIMENTAL and DANGEROUS. It is disabled by default, and for a good reason. I think it's very unlikely that the kernel on the gentoo boot CD has this option enabled. (Maybe one of the guru's around can give a definate answer on this?)
So I think you'll have to compile your own kernel for this one. See the Gentoo installation guide for this.
Note that kernels 2.5.26 and above have a new NTFS driver available. The guys who wrote it say it's much better (less bugs, faster) than the old driver. There are patches available for the 2.4 kernel series. Note that the new driver doesn't have write support at all. But their homepage does have detailed information on how to write to NTFS in the most safe way.
Finally, there is even NTFS support for DOS. So you can make a DOS boot-floppy which loads an NTFS driver. The read/write program is a commercial program from Sysinternals.com. They offer a free demo, but alas it's read only. They also have versions for Win98, but again the demo is read-only. |

what about a windos {xp|2k|nt} install or boot cd? there you have rescue console with wich you can edit things like boot.ini or so

Write support will not work on 2000/XP NTFS partitions even if you compile it into the kernel. The new security and compression features of the later NTFS causes the kernel to mount it RO anyhow.

All of them (except for NT 4 with SP4 installed) are not able to read the filesystem because it is NTFS 5.0. It has different characteristics that pretty much are unable to be interpreted by anything pre-service pack 4 of NT 4.
At least theoretically, and according to the 15-20 MCSEs that were at my last job LOL
I used to hear them complain about it all the time.
Edit: forgive me.. I'm not in my right mind right now.. I thought that xp|2k read 95/98! My bad.
XP and 2K bootup disks, I don't think they have a fully command prompt driven system like 98 had. |

It's not really a gentoo thing but what the hell..
Is it a normal disk (ata or single scsi) then rip out the disk, and place it in another system which is running NT4.0 SP6, or Windows 2000.
When that os is booted, you will have read and write permissions to the bad install. ANd you can replace the disk.
Is it a RAID set, then it is going to be somewhat more fun
