Just curious! Because, ports is a bit too complicated for me.

1/ Under pure FreeBSD, the answer is : No !
2/ Under Gentoo/FreeBSD, using portage is not only possible, it is Gentoo/FreeBSD's goal.
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/fr/gentoo-freebsd.xml
3/ Practically speaking it will not be 100% possible.
- Things are evolving quickly however, when I was interested in this, Gentoo/FreeBSD was never compatible with the last FreeBSD's legacy.
=> You were (are ?) likely to be forced to downgrade your FreeBSD
- Things that are not possible under FreeBSD will remain impossible.
It is not because they are in portage and you are under a Gentoo/FreeBSD that they will work.
i.e. atm, 64 bit blobs, alsa, midi...
4/ I agree that portage is easier to use than the port system. However, I never needed any application in portage that would run under FreeBSD and that I would not find in the ports system. (I wrote I never needed => does not mean that there are not any)

My own and personal opinion about this is to remain coherent. If you get a FreeBSD system and you need it uptodated for working on it, get used to ports !

The documentation you linked is in French. I think the English version might be more appropriate:

I never did a FreeBSD/Gentoo install, but you can ask geekounet for some feedback.
