Hiya!

OK, I received some parasolid files recently, and want to view them in BRL-CAD. According to the documentation, this should be possible by way of the fact that a converter exists (ug-g), but it has a catch to it. In particular, the documentation states that:

Quote:
Because the Unigraphics-to-BRL-CAD converter, ug-g, was written using the Unigraphics UG/Open API library, users must have a Unigraphics UG/Open execute or development license in order to run it. This converter is compiled for SGI Irix machines running on MIPS processors; however, users can compile it for other platforms by obtaining the BRL-CAD source distribution and a UG/Open development license from Unigraphics.

In a nutshell, what does this mean? Where / how might I obtain such a licence? The BRL-CAD distribution seems to include the source code for this program (/usr/portage/distfiles/cvs-src/brlcad/src/external/Unigraphics/ug-g.c), but how can I compile it?

Thanks in advance for any help, I'm stumped.

Cheers!

Apologies reviving such an old inquiry, but since nobody responded to you..

In a nutshell, it means you're out-of-luck unless you want to pay for a Unigraphics developer license (which isn't cheap). The best way to import a parasolid file depends on what you intend to do with it once imported, but you basically use a different importer. If you merely want to visualize the model, I'd suggest importing via the 3DM or IGES formats (3dm-g and iges-g respectively). Beyond visualization, you'll want to import using OBJ, DXF, or STL though those will likely convert your representation to a polygonal format.

Cheers!
Sean
