I'm very ashamed to admit I'm playing this game, however admiting doesn't solve my problem. The game installs smoothly, yet running it is not so smooth. First a window pops up and asks to choose a 3D video device (it's part of the game, not wine). Options I see are "Direct3D support" and "Software Rendering". None of these seem to work. Choosing software rendering shows the logo for some time and then simply quits, Direct3D pops out an error message:

General protection fault!
History: UD3DRenderDevice::CreateVideoTexture<-AllocTextures<-
UD3DRenderDevice::SetRes<-UD3DRenderDevice::Init<-
UWindowsViewport::TryRenderDevice<-
UWindowsViewport::OpenWindow<-UGameEngine::Init<-InitEngine

Seems that this message is by wine, not by the game.
It's very strange, because I looked it up at the AppDB and it has 5 platinum and 1 golden ratings, two of which are from Gentoo users. Everyone says it's working just fine, so I'm starting to think this is a problem of my particular machine or configuration. One thing that may be relevant is that I'm using 64bit OS, therefore all of my drivers should also be 64bit. I'm no specialist, but this is my best guess. I'd be glad if someone took their time helping me :)

What video card are you using? Nvidia seems to be about the only thing that works with Wine.

I remember seeing a similar error with Advent Rising. The General Protection Fault looks familiar.
I don't know why it happens though, sorry.

I'm using some kind of built-in ATI Radeon card. I've also tried GTA3, which works, yet is very laggy. No surprise with such a video card.
HP doesn't even start now, simply shows General protection Fault! History:appInit

I assume you mean this game? http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=4317
It's unreal engine 1 which generally works flawlessly under wine.

post up your glxinfo (emerge mesa-progs if you don't have it), and your wine version, also if you have any dll overrides set in wine try disabling them for that application (if you've installed d3dx9 with winetricks, or something like that)
