|
|
After updating last week ~x86. I received a few new kernels. .33-rc5 .32 etc.. Am having problems with X on the .33 My existing xorg.conf would not work, I renamed it to .bak hal gives me a 800x600 resolution.
The nvidia 190.53-r1 fails to emerge.
emerge info

I have a nvidia 7150 gpu
Anyone know the correct driver for this kernel? |

Let me rephrase the question, Am I wasting my time with .33? As it is not ready yet for the average user.
After my last update, I used -5 for etc-update and did modify my configs, .30 to .32 kernels now seem to get in some loop during boot, all in network area. Takes 9 min to get from grub to kdm, and another 6 min to a working desktop. Just as long for shut down. A full 1/2 hour to boot and shut down.
Yet, the .33 kernel boots to working kde desktop in about 1 min. I have to fix something either way. Would be happy with nv driver on .33, unable to get a working xorg.conf to switch to nv.
Should I just rewrite my configs and use .32?
Sorry for asking for an opinion here, Will trust opinions from here over my own. |

carpenterguy,
If you want to use -rc software you are supposed to be able to fix it yourself or make good bug reports to help others fix it.
-rc ... thats Release Candidate, things are often broken
Go back to a -32 kernel. _________________ Regards,

Moved from Kernel & Hardware to Unsupported Software.
As we don't support Release Candidate stuff _________________ Regards,

Gentoo Linux nVidia Guide is the bible.
In my experience if a newest nvidia-drivers does not support an older card the emerge attempt provides feedback to tell you what version you need so that you can use /etc/portage/package.mask to block the newer versions that do not support your card. What message did you get in response to Code: | emerge nvidia-drivers | ? |

If you want to use 2.6.33, either use the nv driver, the vesa driver or nouveau. nvidia has not yet released a proprietary blob compatible with .33 apparently. |

Thanks for the reply's. I think I need the nouveau driver. I am dual booted on this computer with sabayon and gentoo, is a testing computer, I expect breakage.
I have another computer dual booted with a stable version of sabayon and gentoo.
I am assuming that the dev already know that the nvidia driver is not working, need another bug report as much as they need another hole in their head.
My big issue at this point is trying to get a working xorg.conf file, that I can switch to nv.
At this point I have it down to no devices found.
Is from a working xorg.conf file on another computer using the same hardware.
I will send bug reports if wanted, exact reports needed would be helpful. |

A word of experience. nvidia is often a little behind the newest x-org, linux kernel. Like anything it takes a little time for testing and fixing to get something so deeply tied into the system like a graphics card driver working 100%. Don't get me wrong, they do update fairly quickly, but if you want to stay on the bleeding edge expect a few cuts
If you want to stay with the nvidia drivers then monitor their forums, ask questions... you know the drill _________________ Brian

I will lie down for a few weeks and let the drivers catch up. Find it odd that I am unable to get a working xorg.conf. deleting the couple that I have tried, using hal to set it up works.
Would be nice to have a working xorg.conf to use the nv driver. I will use google to search farther, any info would be appreciated.
Since this computer is for testing, any commands or drivers you want...... I will try and report the outcome. |

I've sent a PM with pre-patched blob information.
Don't use hal either anymore _________________ IRC!: #zen-sources on irc.rizon.net

Just to add, I'm currently running vanilla-sources-2.6.33-rc7 with nouveau, quite happily. I don't have 3D, mostly because I'm more comfortable messing with kernels and such than I am with X. The earliest versions of nouveau I used had some problems (memory leak?) limiting usage to a few hours, but the newer versions are just fine, for me. _________________ .sigs waste space and bandwidth |

Maybe this should be a new thread, but what should we use instead of HAL now? Is HAL depreciated?
EDIT: Answered my own question, it looks like DeviceKit is taking over... |

They've announced the deprecation of HAL, but I believe that's slated for xorg-server-1.8, and Gentoo stable is still at xorg-server-1.6.5. Not only that, but assuming devicekit should be in sys-auth along with consolekit and policykit - it's not there, yet.
This sounds like it might well be a good idea, good strategy, and all that. But right now it's just that - strategy. The pieces aren't in place yet to do it, so we're stuck with a deprecated HAL for likely a good year. Kind of like retiring the Space Shuttle when Aries/Constellation are on the drawing board, years away from flight, if ever. (I've heard a bit more about retiring the Shuttle - they started closing down the supply lines a good year ago, and it would be all but impossible to restart it, and VERY expensive - and you thought the regular flights were expensive.) _________________ .sigs waste space and bandwidth |
