Imac G3 live cd problems

Greetings!
I'm installing gentoo on my old iMac G3 350 Mhz (slotloading) to make it useful, but I seam to be stuck between a rock and a hard place. First of to boot the cd i can't press the "c" I have to go into open firmware and type in boot cd:,\\yaboot

Once I get into yaboot

I type in and get:

boot: ppc32
Loading Kernel...

read error
boot:

---------

Can anyone please tell me what I'm doing worng what should I do to fix it?

Can you read the kernel file from the CD in MacOS? These old iMacs have been known to have issues with reading from CD-Rs in the past.
