My system has become mixed up during an update and it now has bootup problems similar to a new install. There fairly tehnical and I don't know which packages to address
The following occurs;

1. Failed to set the lvm

2. cannot start consolefont as keymaps could not start

3. The device-mapper init script is written for baselayout-2. Please don't use it with baselayout-1

4. xf86OpenConsole: Cannot open virtual console (No such file or directory) This occurs trying to bring up kde

The usual conent of /dev is not built by udev now. /dev only contains
console
core
fd
initctl
kmsg
log
null
ptr
shm
stderror
stdin
stdout
tty
tty1
tty12

The sad thing is this all used to work fine but the system upgrade has degraded its ability.

idella4,

A few hints for yor posting style. It looks like you have done an update and its broken a few things. Rather than starting lots of threads, describe what you did and what happened in a single post. Provide all the information to potential helpers in one place.

When you get a response, your helper(s) and you can decide in what order to address the issues. Thats important. The same work may clear several related issues, which you may not know are related when you create several threads.

Lastly, working on several issues at the same time, as if they are totaly independent (they may not be) will confuse both you and your helpers as you will be following advice from several threads at the same time and your helpers in different threads will not have all the information about the changes made to your system.

Had I seen your posts earlier, I would have merged them into a single thread to help both you and your helpers but with the response you already have that would probably make matters worse.

Please keep this advice in mind for next time

That's great advice.

I would start from the beginning with your repairs, something like this:

Good luck! :)

neddy, yes all right.
Mike, thanks for your previous tips. But what do you think I've done? The system has had an upgrade, so how can the basic stuff not be in place?? It's got nothing to do with the kernel. I've emerged the system twice. Then I posted the issues in this thread. The system is broken. I described it above. What more can I say.

In terms of the basic stuff, these guides don't go into that detail. What I know is device-mapper has been abandoned udev has a new version. The guides don't go into what packages do what and how they inter-relate and what's new and what's old. They don't talk about baselayout and lvm and other technical packages. They just say how to install a system. Well I've emerged the system and it doesn't work.

I've cited the problems. At face value it looks like key system commands are missing. It says keymaps couldn't start. The init script wants baselayout-2. /dev is almost empty on boot up.
I don't know. I'm hoping someone here does know. Presumably all the required packages are there, so perhaps they need config files setup properly. emerge says config files in /etc need updating. I've seen this before years ago but it never broke a system. In the time I've spent on this I could have created a new gentoo from scratch. gentoos don't need replacing, they should be resilient and upgradable, but it appears fragile and error prone.
I don't know

Ok, gotcha. It was hard/impossible to follow because so many threads were scattered all over.

Now, here. Am I reading this correctly; you say that you are not updating the configs with etc-update (or whatever updater you prefer) when emerge reports the need to do so, or did I not read correctly?

If you aren't, then you really must do that.

Mike yes, quite right. I've always overwritten them before and not had a problem. Care to advise on how to do it There are so many and I woudn't know what they are. Remember in the early stage emerged pointed out that CONFIG_PROTECT was empty. You even prompted me to clear it from /etc/make.profile
I"ll look at man emerge again, but from memory it recommends a command that overwrites them in one sweep. You say etc-update. I probably used it in the past and I've forgotten it. That might solve everything. I may as well run it.

Code:

The only one I see there that you may have edited is /etc/openldap/slapd.conf, so you can use -3 or -5.

Make a backup of /etc/openldap/slapd.conf first in another terminal if you are uncertain about overwriting it.

yes, well, I made a backup of the whole etc folder, I don't know why. It was broken anyway. I ran etc-update. and rebooted. Made no difference. It's useless.
Unless someone know how to go about this, it looks to me like its too far gone. It's completely crippled. The system was perfectly all right before the upgrade. I've done nothing radical, standard procedure and it's ended up a complete mess. Re-emerging usually helps but it hasn't. Is this what gentoo is all about?

idella4,

Search through your /var/log/emerge.log and post the section for the update that broke things.

You say that its not the kernel?
If you use a kernel with an initrd, that may not be true as there has been a few udev updates recently. There was no sign of the udev initscript in your etc-update list, which is odd. Do you have root on lvm or do you have a root on non lvm to avoid the need for an initrd ?

Your /dev list looks like the bare minimum that an initrd would need - that suggests a udev issue.

Lets take the GUI away just now and get the system to boot into the console, then you can try startx to get Xorg.
Remove xdm from all runlevels. That will prevent Xorg and KDE starting at boot. We will fix the simplified system that remains, then add Xorg and KDE back.

I have a Gentoo install dating from the end of 2002. I've had a few challenges with it as its always been ~x86 but I've never has to redo it.
Its on its second motherboard and third set of hard drives too. This is not how Gentoo normally is.

Also, make sure you run a recent kernel, because from portage log:

* udev-146 does not support Linux kernel before version 2.6.25!
* For a reliable udev, use at least kernel 2.6.27

neddy, hooray, glad to hear from you. You've helped me in the past mostly on the kernel.
Now,
I'm running a kernel-2.6.25-gentoo-r7. It's hardly been used. aguettinger says I need a
jernel-2.6.25 or later. Now at a stage when I had unmerged kde, I booted into it once.
Ihad only removed kde, I had I think upgraded worls, and I had an xdm console. It was
enough to do whatever I did. After that, I ran revdep-rebuild which lead to unmerging
udev from a well complained nessage about udev-126 which didn't exist. Anyway, I got
around it from a solution I found via google, emrged I think a cryptsetup which allowed
the new udev to be emerged. If I Istopped there I might have been all right, but I
upgraded system since system had been dragged into it.

Now

I wouldn't know where to start. Shall I post the whole damn thing? It's a mile long. Can
I upload it on the site somehow? Besides it's just a record of installations and I don't
know how it can indicate the trouble points.

in addition, just to make your point about the other thread, andy posted the following to fix up the whole thing. It looks good to me. Can you read and verify please.

Quote:

emerge --update --newuse --deep world

Only then your system is up to date.

update & deep is required to get all your dependencies updated. New packages build
with completely outdated dependencies will break your system.
Selecting a new profile changes default USE flags. newuse will be required to
rebuild you system with the new changed use flags. Packages with the wrong use
flags in action will break yours system.

In fact, revdep-rebuild is a tool to check the consistency of the portage tree
after you removed packages, and thus in almost all of the cases makes only sense
to use after

emerge -uNDPv world
emerge --depclean
revdep-rebuild

He suggests the updating I've done falls short of what's required.

idella4,

Check your version of udev. It has had some updates recently that mean it won't work properly with older kernels like yours.
The proper course of action is to update the kernel.

You will have udev-146-r1 or later.
The ebuild says
Code:

        # udev requires signalfd introduced in kernel 2.6.25,
        # but a glibc compiled against >=linux-headers-2.6.27 uses the
        # new signalfd syscall introduced in kernel 2.6.27 without falling back
        # to the old one. So we just depend on 2.6.27 here, see Bug #281312.

Update to kernel >=2.6.27 that may well get your /dev back

neddy. neddy. need you now. I have a kernel problem. emerged the latest, compiled

  OBJCOPY arch/x86/boot/vmlinux.bin
  BUILD   arch/x86/boot/bzImage
Root device is (8, 6)
Setup is 11164 bytes (padded to 11264 bytes).
System is 3649 kB

Kernel: arch/x86/boot/bzImage is ready  (#3)
  Building modules, stage 2.
  MODPOST 2 modules
Susie linux-2.6.30-gentoo-r8 # make modules_install
  INSTALL arch/x86/kernel/test_nx.ko
  INSTALL drivers/scsi/scsi_wait_scan.ko
  DEPMOD  2.6.30-gentoo-r8

It hasn't installed the modules.

[code]
Susie linux-2.6.30-gentoo-r8 # ls -l /lib/modules
total 2
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 512 2008-09-03 02:05 2.6.21-xen
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 680 2009-11-24 18:09 2.6.25-gentoo-r7
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 632 2009-11-24 23:38 2.6.30-gentoo-r8
[code]

Suse's dolphin file manager tells that /lib/modules/2.6.21-xen is 9.5 mb., /lib/modules/2.6.25-gentoo-r7 is 15 .8 mb, and the new /lib/modules/2.6.30-gentoo-r8 is 7.6 kb.
I can't convert to the new kernel.

I compile using make oldconfig, so it should have picked up the settings from 2.6.25, and I filled in the new settings, made the new .config and compiled. I"ll check it more closely later, but it doesn't make sense. It installed only 3 modules from a full compile.

I've finished the latest world upgrade, emerge --depclean and revdep-rebuild completed without issue. I booted into it and got the same problems I initially listed, plus one or two more that I'll have to repeat to grasp properly. It can't set lvm, and the init scripts are for the [/code][/profile]wrong baselayout. A new kernel might help but it looks to me more than just that.

This will take some unravelling help

That's because you haven't told it to. The command
Code:
make modules_install
does that.

idella4,

Five full versions is a big jump with make oldconfig.
It can get you off to a good start but I would want to go through make.conf after just to make sure.

make does jusr what it says on the tin. It makes the kernel, it makes the modules.
It does not install the kernel to /boot and it does not install the modules.

johm, you missed it. from above, make then

Code:

Susie linux-2.6.30-gentoo-r8 # make modules_install
  INSTALL arch/x86/kernel/test_nx.ko
  INSTALL drivers/scsi/scsi_wait_scan.ko
  DEPMOD  2.6.30-gentoo-r8

I then cited the size of the folder in /lib/modules.

neddy, yes ok, that still leaves me at a loss.

Quote:

I'm quite aware of this. I've done this before over a few years. But neddy, what about the system things. That's what I've been waiting for to be addressed. ok I'll review this kernel, but you've confused me. Why make.conf? With what I've done, make.conf has several new use flags to achieve my broken upgrade., well world is upgraded but the system part is broken. What do I check in make.conf re a kernel compile.? Is installing a total of three modules a good start after a full compile? I haven't seen this before and am totally confused. This time gentoo has got it wrong. I've upgraded according to advice and guide lines and this is the result. I could have created a new gentoo with a new system tarball three times over in the time it's taken,

The system; lvm setup fails when it was allright before. ok the /dev might be linked to kernel and udev, but that's NOT the total. The kernel doesn't dictate the init scripts, completely separate. The init scripts are for baselayout-2, which is NOT on offer in portage.

neddy I know you're extremely gentoo educated, you've been posting help for years. I'm sure you can sort this out. I'm relying on you

and for good measure

oh dear. note,
System uname: Linux-2.6.25.11-0.1-xen-i686-Intel-R-_Core-TM-2_Duo_CPU_E6550_@_2.33GHz-with-gentoo-1.12.13
It's picked up a mixture. I'm in a suse xen kernel environment, from chroot with /proc and /dev. So just ignore that.
I've got two gentoos, this one and a second from the same vintage of about 18 months ago This one I call genny, the other gentoo. gentoo is as yet completely untouched from 18 months ago and is in perfect working order, I need an up to date genny to look at xen again. Now I would be working from gentoo and chroot into genny except for
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-803188.html
which is unanswered.

Hah! You're right; sorry. One quick question. You said you ran "make oldconfig". Did you actually copy the .config file from your old kernel source directory to your new one before running that command?

john, thanks, hmmmmmm, no I didn't. Now I thought make oldconfig took your settings from the prior kernel, found the new settings, prompted you for the new settings, then merged them. I'm not sure whether I've used make oldconfig in the past or not, I think not. ok, having done what I've done, what's required?
It looks like I copy the .config from 6.26 like you say, then run make oldconfig? and are you up to neddy's skills, re the rest of the system?

Nobody is. :P

Please be more specific. Post the exact versions and patchlevels please.

Hi Mike, what do you mean? exact versions and patchlevels??? How about

Code:

Susie / # ls /usr/src
linux  linux-2.6.21-xen  linux-2.6.25-gentoo-r7  linux-2.6.30-gentoo-r8  rpm

You've lost me. unfortunately. It makes me look like a beginner but I'm not. I've compiled kernels and added them and booted them and got neddy to troubleshoot them. I'm actually quite experienced, but oh is there alot to learn in gentoo. It's challenging all right. Fortunately gentoo has neddy.

I'm going to save the .config in the latest gentoo sources under a backup name, copy the .config from -2.6.26 implied by john and repeat. It looks like that's required.

version is 2.6.nn part
patchlevel is the -r* part at the end

As far as I know, using make oldconfig is ok when upgrading to a different patchlevel of the same kernel version, but definitely not safe when upgrading 5 versions.

It would be safer to use make defconfig and enable what you need in your kernel manually, such as with make menuconfig

You can also visit Pappy's Kernel Seeds for ideas and assistance to build your new kernel.

thanks Mike. I'm going to quote neddy from 18 months ago. In gentoo them he suggested to use make oldconfig. In gentoo I accumulated three kernels. neddy helped me with one or two. To compile the newest then, he suggested to make oldconfig.

Code:

Susie:/home/idella/downloads # ls /mnt/gentoo/usr/src
.keep  linux-2.6.21-xen        linux-2.6.25-gentoo-r6
linux  linux-2.6.24-gentoo-r8  linux-2.6.26-gentoo

Ofcourse at the time the versions only stretched 2 versions. So, I copied the .config from 2.6.25 and ran make oldconfig on genny. It went on and on, many new settings, most of which I don;t need. neddy said of my current state it was a big ask stretching 5 versions, but that's all. Anyway, a new .config was generated and I viewed it briefly in make menuconfig. It's so long you could be there for ever. I spent that time 18 months ago and I didn't see why it should be wasted by starting again. I added a couple of things that I saw. It's compiling now. I thought the compile last night was a bit quick. This is the first time I've used oldconfig. Some things needed fixing so I remember making the .config with menuconfig, not using the oldconfig option.

oh gentoo. There is so much to absorb

oh no. A step backwards. I've got a new kernel and a new problem. kernel panic, looks like it can't find the root file system. This is so annoying. Yes that's it. The processor type is wrong I'm sure. This is exactly what happened 18 months ago. make defconfig got it wrong. It took neddy several posts to pinpoint it..That's why I wanted make oldconfig
New kernel

edit .....

Now, new kernel-2.6.30 is up and running with all I want at this point. I have bootup. level 3. I have kde4. I have devices, neddy you were right on that one. I have updated with etc-update. I have successful entry into genny's kde4 which I've finally seen for the first time. I have ONE problem with genny, and ONE problem with gentoo. for genny, it's one I first cited and haven't figured out.

Quote:

The device-mapper init script is written for baselayout-2. Please don't use it with baselayout-1

which has concerned me the most. In upgrading and emerging the new udev, gentoo insisted on removing device-mapper having created blocks. In kde4 the mouse can't work, all over the place. As I said, baselayout-2 is absent from portage so I can't try it. I haven't tried emerging it since its not there. Also, 18 months ago in my then new gentoos, baselayout-2 was used and it broke things, in my case network connectivity. Back then I reverted to baselayout-1. So I have

Code:

Susie / # emerge --pretend device-mapper

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  N    ] sys-fs/device-mapper-1.02.24-r1  USE="(-selinux)"
[blocks B     ] sys-fs/device-mapper ("sys-fs/device-mapper" is blocking sys-fs/udev-146-r1)
[blocks B     ] sys-fs/device-mapper ("sys-fs/device-mapper" is blocking sys-fs/lvm2-2.02.51-r1)

 * Error: The above package list contains packages which cannot be
 * installed at the same time on the same system.

('ebuild', '/', 'sys-fs/device-mapper-1.02.24-r1', 'merge') pulled in by
    device-mapper

I'm trapped. device-mapper was the choice and has been replaced with packages that look for baselayout-2.

For gentoo, ONE problem as cited; https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-803188.html

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-790353-highlight-devicemapper+init+written+baselayout2.html

Remove the device-mapper script from the corresponding runlevel. It's not needed for baselayout1.

aguettinger or andy, thanks. I had hoped it would work. Sooooo close. I removed it from rc just like suggested. It's one step closer but not there. This time, bootup appeared clean. No error message re baselayout. so I expected success. Once in kde4, the mouse did the same, the kde background was jumping around a little. Unusable. I still need neddy. It should work. Every linux distro deals with the mouse without a problem. I don't know. This should be quite fixable. It looks as if it needs some other script to map devices if not device-mapper.
