|
|
i've noticed today that the kde device notifier applet is no longer working. upgrading from 4.32 to 4.33 hasn't helped.
basically what happens is when i plug in a usb hard drive the partitions are detected and appear correctly under the "devices recently plugged" section.
however, when i select the "open with file manager" option all it does is open dolphin to my default home directly, whereas in the past it used to mount the partition correctly and open dolphin in the mounted root directory of the partition....ie it doesn't mount the partition (in /media/partitionX ) like it used to
i'm not sure when this broke as its been at least a month or so since i've plugged in a usb hard drive.
i can still mount each partition manually....i've also tried recompiling hal and dbus but to no effect. this seems to be kde related.
/var/log/messages and /var/log/syslog aren't showing any error messages of any kind
has anyone experienced similar issues?
details as follows:

Hey,
You do see the USB devices in dolphin (when they are not mounted). Try mounting it from dolphin - if that fails (which it presumably would) then see the error message at the bottom of the dolphin window.
If you can however mount devices using dolphin but not the device manager plasmoid, then try using this one as an alternative and see if it works. _________________ Who shall guard the guards? |

sorry, this might come across as a really dumb question, but how do you mount something via from dolphin? i didn't know this was possible...google isn't helping me i'm afraid _________________ I might not have morals...but at least I have standards |

OK, forget the device notifier. When you insert a USB drive it should pop up in the places (left pane of dolphin) menu (this is where you also have entries like home, root, etc.). Just click on the icon for the USB drive in the places menu and the drive will be mounted.
If not, you will see the error at the bottom of the dolphin window. _________________ Who shall guard the guards? |

there are no device here.
Progress:
After downgrade dbus to dbus-1.2.3-r1 I can mount and umount USB drive in Dolphin. But this requires a restart each time after plug and unplug. No devices in the notifier. Suspend and Hybernate commands are disappearing from the KDE menu after firs plug. |

Well, yesterday I ran update world on my x86 system. After that the device-notifier did not work anymore. After updating and restarting hal (and its dependencies) it was working again. _________________ Hello, IT. Have you tried turning it off and on again? |

I have
[ebuild R ] sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.31-r5 USE="-build -symlink" 0 kB
[ebuild R ] sys-apps/dbus-1.3.0-r1 USE="X -debug -doc (-selinux) -test" 0 kB
[ebuild R ] sys-apps/hal-0.5.13-r2 USE="X acpi crypt laptop -apm -consolekit -debug -dell -disk-partition -doc -policykit (-selinux)" 0 kB
After re-emerge solid and soliduiserver:
1. Plug USB drive
2. Device notifier showing it.
3. I select "open in file manager"
4. Dolphin opens USB drive. (I'm happy)
5. I try remove USB in Dolphin.
6. Dolphin says: "org.freedesktopDBus.Error.ServiceUnknoun: The name org.freedesktop.Hal was not provided by any .service files"
The end. Mount point in /media deleted, Suspend and Hybernate disappeared, USB in lists in Dolphin and in notifier.
New pluged devices not showed but present in /dev.
After restart dbus new devices showing but no Suspend command in Kmenu. |

This remedied the device notifier on my side as well, I just rebuilt and restarted HAL. Restarting was not sufficient. |

Doesn't work here. I rebuilt hal and restarted my PC. Still only opens the my homefolder in dolphin instead of mounting and opening it.
| Code: |
sys-apps/hal-0.5.13-r2
sys-apps/dbus-1.3.0-r1
2.6.31-gentoo-r2

for me, i got this working again as a by product of trying to solve a more pressing problem with firefox:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-801865-start-0-postdays-0-postorder-asc-highlight-.html
ie basically i dropped my CFLAGS settings from -O3 down to -O2 and ran an "emerge -e world"
looks like using the gcc-4.4.2 compiler on a x~86 system with the -O3 cflags setting breaks a few things
as a few guys in this thread are still having issues i won't mark this thread as solved just yet.
good luck _________________ I might not have morals...but at least I have standards |

I have had similar problems with KDE Device Notifier and KDE Battery Monitor for a long time after some upgrade of KDE 4.??
After checking /etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf
| Code: | <!-- Gentoo specific rules to allow 'plugdev' group to access Volumes and Power Management -->
<policy group="plugdev">
<allow send_destination="org.freedesktop.Hal"
send_interface="org.freedesktop.DBus.Introspectable"/>
<allow send_destination="org.freedesktop.Hal"
send_interface="org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties" />
<allow send_destination="org.freedesktop.Hal"
send_interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device"/>
...
|
As my user was not in that group:
| Code: | | usermod -a -G plugdev myusername |
After a reboot, external devices nicely appeared in Device Notifier and Battery Monitor was reporting the current power status.
kernel 2.6.36-gentoo-r5
KDE 4.4.5
sys-apps/dbus-1.4.1
sys-apps/hal-0.5.14-r2 |
