Hi,
The error I am getting is:
Code:

hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady Seek SeekComplete Error }
hda: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UnrecoverableError }, LBAsect=1, sector=0
end_request: I/o error, dev 03.00 (hda), sector 0

Its an old pII system but openbsd was running on it and windblows 98 can fdisk and format?
thanks

I think I just stumbled across the answer to this... you'll have to rebuild your kernel. After running 'make menuconfig', go to "ATA/IDE/MFM/RLL support --->", "IDE, ATA and ATAPI Block devices --->", "Use multi-mode by default"
Quote:
CONFIG_IDEDISK_MULTI_MODE:

If you get this error, try to say Y here:

hda: set_multmode: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: set_multmode: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }

If in doubt, say N.

I hope that kanuslupus is right, but I am less optimistic. I read the errors the initial poster is seeing as being encountered during a normal DMA access to the hard disk, rather than by an attempt to send the disk into multimode. The error messages may be similar, but it looks to me like they arise as a result of different activities.

I fear the drive may be on its last legs.

I would love to be able rebuild my kernel, but i think i need to be able to use fdisk to partition so i can do an install first :(
This computer is a OLD compaq deskpro 2000 POS, I think my problem is ide lba / translation related. Removing the drive then reinstalling so it gets autodetected, it kindly tell me if i am going to run unix i need to run the user diagnostics program, it has a setting for translation but works not ether way :( Oh well, using an old scsi and is installing fine as i type 8)
