Fewer mods means faster, easier upgrades. There would have to be a lot of demand for this mod before we would install it. rac did an outstanding job updating everything here for the most recent upgrade. It's unfortunate, but it's starting to require a fantastic effort every time we want to upgrade. I don't think we want to make this process any harder.

it adds a text input box to the end of threads so you can reply from the same page

This sounds like a great idea. Perhaps a poll is in order? pjp?

A poll isn't really relevant. How much maintenance the 'phpbb upgraders' will have to deal with when upgrading phpbb is the issue.

lots of sites use the mod, so I wouldn't think it'd make it all that hard to maintain. it just gets added to the template - which wouldn't be changed when upgrading anyway.

any mod to the vanilla phpBB code is one more thing we have to maintain and ensure works correctly. That increases the complexity of upgrades and makes things more difficult all around. Our general policy on mods is that we don't add them unless it solves a bug or problem. For feature improvements, we request that users submit those to the phpBB folks for inclusion in the default phpBB code.

that's your choice, of course, and I see where you're coming from. but I would just like to make it clear that adding this particular mod doesn't require changing any PHP (at least it didn't last time I installed it). it only requires the addition of a form to part of the board style - since you're using a custom style anyway it couldn't possibly add any extra work / create any problems.

also, I'd like to make the point that on a large / busy forum such as this adding a quick reply form could save on bandwidth - since people do not have to load another full page of HTML to post a reply.

If it really doesn't require to change phpBB itself then I think it could be a great improvement in these forums

If I'm not mistaken, the last upgrade did require some tweaking of the custom style.

Bandwidth isn't a big concern.

This doesn't mean that it has to change phpBB code. It could very well do that because of our custom theme. Even if it didn't, this would be yet another thing to have to remember to do everytime we upgraded.

Sad to see such an excellent mod was rejected so long ago...

I think a good analogy is that the quick reply mod is like an shell alias to a commonly used command. It just makes the process of writing a quick reply faster, but (from what I gathered) does not affect the PHP or database in the slightest, and in the event that it's somehow got in the way of an upgrade you could simply remove it.

Oh well, I'm probably talking to an empty wall here.

If its any consolation, I don't think there are any "mods" installed. Search had to be customized, but thats a different issue.

Maybe you should just choose someone to maintain the forums, it would be easiest way to improve the forums.

In fact, at this very same moment forum is using an old version with known security issues (the exploits are posted all over the internet).

Maybe bandwith is not an issue at the moment, but you could optimize the forum a lot, some times it actually takes a while to browse these forums or make a search.

My humble opinion (as a phpBB board admin) is that you should get someone (if you dont have already) to correctly maintain and optimize the forums and the db.

Oh one more thing, in case you guys didn't know there are tools designed to update a forum with mods, it was designed not to reinstall the mod but to only apply a patch and thats it.

From my experience (using phpBB since 2001) installing a few mods is ok, inserting too many mods could complicate things though.

We already have a number of people that do this. That doesn't mean we want to add to their workload.

In fact, you're wrong. Just because the footer says we're running 2.0.6 does not mean we really are.
