First, let me say that I love Gentoo. I've got it running on my laptop and I couldn't be happier with it.

But,

I'm having trouble getting anything bigger than solitare running in winex. Every time I try to run setup from a Quake 2 or Warcraft 3 cd, I get this
Code:
wine: Unhandled exception, starting debugger...
err:seh:start_debugger Couldn't start debugger ("debugger/winedbg 134750800 88") (2)
Read the Wine Developers Guide on how to set up winedbg or another debugger
err:dc:DCE_FreeWindowDCE [00010021] GetDC() without ReleaseDC()!

Are you using the latest version of winex?

Code:
$ emerge -s winex
...
*  app-emulation/winex
      Latest version Available: 20020628

If I were you, I would upgrade to the latest version, as many issues can be resolved in four months' time.

Make sure you have these two files in your c/windows/system directory.

MSVCRT.DLL: http://www.dll-files.com/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/dll-files/topdown/download.pl?file=msvcrt.zip==
REGSVR32.EXE: http://download.microsoft.com/download/access95/util5/1/WIN98/EN-US/Regsv32a.exe

The regsvr32 to one need to be executed when once you d/l it. Then put the REGSVR32.EXE it outputs into c/windows/system.

Is this to fix the War3 issue? I'm having the same 100% CPU usage but nothing happening when I run the installer.

where abouts is the cpu maxing in the install process ????
is winex actually finding the drive or is it bombing after it starts the install??

Cheers

This is my first experience with winex (or wine for that matter). I give the command
Code:
winex --winver win98 /mnt/cdrom/install.exe
and the CPU goes nuts, but nothing happens. It keeps going like that until I kill the process.

was the cdrom mounted ?, you also shouldnt need to specify the winver either #winex /mnt/cdrom/install.exe should be fine.....

also check the cdrom device is right in the winex config....especially if using scsi emulation or scsi drive as the default is ide

cheers
Dale.

Straight from transgaming.com:
Quote:
Mount the CD, and run install.exe on the CD with the winver set to win98 under config. (even though 95/98 are exactly the same when playing the game--i hate that)

However, they also say:
Quote:
You should disable the ide-scsi thing because it seems to cause problems =(
What exactly does that mean? is that what you're talking about?

And yes the cdrom was mounted, and the cdrom device is right in the winex config, but I'll double check.

This is in reference to running emulation on an ide cdrw to act as a scsi drive so linux cdwriting software can see it ,this is set up in the kernel but as I posted previously I have had no probs with it , some people were having trouble with copy protection with the emulated drives....

To be honest I havent used the ebuild im running the bins from transgaming...but I cant really understand what would be causing the issue if your drives and permissions on the wine dir are setup correctly , I take it youve installed the two files posted above ..but I really cant see that making a difference......anyone else around had this issue with the ebuild??

Sorry but I cant really help furthur but it does appear it is a cdrom issue as it should crash with a unhandled exception or something otherwise, ...has it displayed a message when initialising at any stage about building font metrics extra when you first used winex ?????

Cheers
Dale..

Yes, without these the install doesn't work.

Same thing...I put both files in the directory but running the command
Code:
winex --winver win98 /mnt/cdrom/install.exe
just sits there and eats cpu cycles. Top shows the programs 'wineserver' and 'wine' as the ones using the CPU.

I got the installer to start by putting the dlls in my ~/fake_windows/Windows directory instead of ~/fake_windows/Windows/System. Now the installer fails because it can't find a file on the cdrom. The reason it can't find the file is that the filenames are shortened on the mounted cdrom. For example, my support/battlenet directory shows up as /support/battlene.

<edit>
I got the cdrom fixed by compiling a kernel with MS Joliet support, but now I get 'wine: Unhandled exception, starting debugger...' every time I try to run the installer :x

Again no luck. Exactly the same thing happens. Can someone verify that what I did was right?

1. Install winex ebuild and wineconfigtk ebuild.
2. Use wineconfigtk to configure wine, creating a .wine dir in ~. This step was mainly just setting paths.
3. Move ~/.wine to ~/.winex and install the two files listed above in this thread into Windows/System.
4. Mount /mnt/cdrom and run 'winex /mnt/cdrom/install.exe'.

It's at this point that the CPU gets 100% usage but nothing ever seems to happen. I've left it in that state for about 5 minutes before CTRL-C.

MS Joliet support is compiled into kernel, and I have tried the files in the Windows directory vs Windows/System as was recommended but again, the same thing.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
