I had just emerged abcde so I can finally rip those cds I had been meaning too. I decided to go ahead and rip one in the background while I was browsing the forums. Got it going, and suddenly I couldn't bring up any posts. Figuring the forums were just down again, I focused my attention to another site. No go there either. Thinking I had a connectivity problem, I pinged some random site and only every 5th or 6th packet would get back Then abcde finished doing its thing and suddenly I had full responsiveness back! Running a few more tests confirmed that whenever abcde was running oggenc, I would lose any practical ability to use the internet!
I had just enabled preempt in my kernel, so I booted to my previous kernel (same settings minus preempt), gave abcde another go and tried pinging something. Only one or two packets were dropped. So, obviously preempt is the culprit here. My question is... why? This is the only problem preempt has given me, and since it seems to make my apps a little zippier (barring this instance), I'd like to keep it if at all possible.
Oh, and my kernel version is 2.4.19-gentoo-r7 |
