Hi.

I am trying to set up iceWM.

I emerged it and from login console it starts with startx as root but not as user.

x11 show some errors on the console , from memory:

Code:
[EE] can't load module freefont ...
[EE] can't load module freefont ...
[EE] can't load module dri ...

I was previously using xfce4 and did not see this difference.

TIA, Gentree. 8)

In fact those errors also appear when starting as root. So they must be non critical and presumably nothing to do with the issue.

The only other output as user is "waiting for X server to shut down".

Is user in the video group?

Do you have a freefont entry in Section "Modules" of xorg.conf? I don't think there is such a thing.

have you tried X without an xorg.conf file?

What kind of VGA device do you have?

freefont entry , no , don't know where it gets this from.

I have a working xorg.conf, as witnessed by xfce4 working both as user and root.

I have an Nvidia card using x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-96.43.13 , the latest release for this hardware.

thx

are you sure it doesn't say [EE] can't load module freetype ... ?

Please post this output
Code:
egrep -v '^(#|$)' /etc/X11/xorg.conf

yes indeed. One of the problem with having a WM where nothing works: you have to work from memory!

I have commented out the two offending occurrences in xorg.conf.

in any case, as I posted above, this was also present when starting as root, so it is irrelevant to the issue.

AFAIK the [EE] can't load module freefont ... is unimportant. That module is obsolete but your xorg still searches for it. It seems to be gone in the xorg-1.6.

The fact that you can login other WMs as user but not iceWM may be a permission problem with the icewm executable - not sure.
