PostPosted: Sat Sep 19, 2009 10:06 pm    Post subject: Mouse very slow with kernel 2.6.30 Reply with quote

I upgraded to kernel 2.6.30-gentoo-r4 a few weeks ago. After starting KDE4, I noticed that the mouse was very slow. The cursor was delayed by about a second, very choppy, and sometimes moved opposite the direction of mouse motion.

I gave up on 2.6.30 (went back to 2.6.29), and figured I would wait for the next kernel and it would probably be fixed. Now I am using kernel 2.6.30-gentoo-r6, and the problem persists. The keyboard is fine, the mouse buttons work well and do not have a delay, but the cursor is delayed and choppy.

Moving the cursor around a lot does not increase the CPU's load.

I can't seem to figure this out, and I want to keep up with the latest kernel. Thanks for any tips, as I can find nothing online about this problem.

Hi there,

Have you by any chance enabled USB-Suspend when playing with powertop? I have the same behavior both with my mouse and keyboard once USB suspend is enabled.

Also check if you kernel is build with the following.
CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND=y

Regards,
Nikolay

No, the CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND is not set.

This is a desktop computer, and I never suspend anything.

The mouse problem occurs immediately after the X server is started.

I have a problem that sounds exactly the same, but I've had it since 2.6.29 sometime. I don't think the problem is in the kernel, I'm leaning towards HAL on this, because I don't think I've spent any time updating it on this machine. My other machine doesn't have this issue.

If you find anything out, please post! This is slowly driving me crazy. :)

You use 'mouse' driver for the mouse in xorg.conf, while recent X servers try use evdev by default. I think to retain the old behaviour without conflicts you have to give an option to X server 'AutoAddDevices off' in the ServerFlags section

I agree with dmpogo. The two mouse configurations might be conflicting with each other.

To try and fix, first make sure you have built xorg-server with hal and evdev support, and also make sure hal is started and is in your default runlevel. Then, I would backup your xorg.conf (just in case) and then remove all your InputDevice sections from your xorg.conf as well as the calls to them in ServerLayout. Restart X and see what happens.

Thanks for your replies guys! I've been getting the same ideas you have from reading 100 different posts, and I've been trying to clean up my config and hope that will be the fix.

Right now I have:

-no InputDevice section in xorg.conf of any kind
-only x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev installed (no xf86-input-mouse or keyboard)
-recompiled hal, and for the hell of it, hal-info.
-checked that hald is in the default start level
-changed to INPUT_DEVICES="evdev" in /etc/make.conf
-recompiled xorg-server (1.5.3-r6 hal input_devices_evdev nptl sdl video_cards_nvidia xorg)
-recompiled all x11 drivers again (xf86-input-evdev and nvidia-drivers)

..and I have a working system... but the mouse still stutters!
(the keyboard seems to have improved a little bit, but it might be my imagination)

I simplified my normal setup and I currently just have a USB keyboard and a USB mouse plugged directly into the server.

I think I'll try going through the xorg-server-1.5 guide and see if it gives me any inspiration.

Any more ideas would be super-welcome! This has just been beating me for too long.

I've upgraded to latest unstable xorg-server, xorg-x11 and evdev driver. Still no change in the stutter.

One more observation, when it starts stuttering, X can grab up to 100% of a CPU.

The USB ports that I'm plugged into are using the OHCI driver (is driver the right term?). The ports that seem to be linked the the EHCI driver are busted (got hit with something heavy a while ago. I've got USB interface I can use the replace them with tomorrow and we'll see if using a different USB port helps.

when mouse stutters, is there something in the log (check dmesq), for example that USB is reconnecting all the time ?
BTW, what hardware are you using ? (on mordern hardware all ports are usb2.0 capable, so EHCI/OHCI is not determined by port, but by the device plugged in. Mice, however, are typically USB1 devices)

Thanks very much for your help dmpogo. Nothing in dmesg or logs about anything disconnecting/connecting whether it's USB or HAL.

The machine is a several-year-old dual Opteron made by Sun (WZ2100, still amd64 of course). It has an AMD-8111 chipset. The interesting part of lspci looks like this:

Once I replaced the USB ports that were damaged, I realized exactly what you just wrote:
Quote:
(on mordern hardware all ports are usb2.0 capable, so EHCI/OHCI is not determined by port, but by the device plugged in.

I was looking at dmesg and hal logs and made some bad conclusions. I'm over-eager to fix this... thing.

I just tried to go "backwards" and switch from evdev to xorg keyboard and mouse drivers. I ended up with getting 3 keystrokes for every keypress in X. Not good for trying to log in. :) I couldn't fix it until I downgraded all the X server software down to "stable" versions and went back to using evdev.

At least I've eliminated hardware as a problem (unless my MB is going crazy)

I'm seriously running out of ideas. What could I have possibly done to make this one machine buggy?

If anyone can read this, this is my messages file (hald is logging verbosely now) as I
1)unplug mouse
2)unplug keyboard
3)plug in mouse
4)plug in keyboard

(gaps inserted by me)

Since my wave of rebuilding (above) the mouse and keyboard have been a lot better. Grabbing a window and moving it rapidly still sends the CPU to 100%, but normal keyboard and mouse use is pretty flawless.

I guess I'm going to call this "solved", but it isn't really.

Thanks for your help everyone!
