Try "opengl-update xfree" as root.

Tell me if it works...

This appears to work - Only thing is now, it ONLY works as root. If I run it as myself (and i am in the games group) it does:

----- Client Initialization -----
----- Initializing Renderer ----

----- Client Initialization Complete -----
----- R_Init -----
...loading libGL.so: Initializing OpenGL display
...setting mode 3: 640 480
Using XFree86-VidModeExtension Version 2.1

libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering

GL_RENDERER: Mesa GLX Indirect

***********************************************************
You are using software Mesa (no hardware acceleration)!
Driver DLL used: libGL.so
If this is intentional, add
"+set r_allowSoftwareGL 1"
to the command line when starting the game.

...loading libMesaVoodooGL.so: QGL_Init: Can't load libMesaVoodooGL.so from /etc/ld.so.conf or current dir: /opt/quake3/libMesaVoodooGL.so: cannot open t file: No such file or directory

That - I assume something to do with permissions on whatever DRM is ?

You see the message, "failed to open DRM"
You may have a problem with your DRI.
I don't know why, it may be a right issue.
Are you sure your DRI module is loaded? (is it in autoload?)

Try put it in autoload, or try to compile it as static in your kernel...

have you installed matrox drivers it appears to bo using software rendering ......

If you have installed the matrox drivers , add load "dri" to the XF86config under the matrox section and restart x , should get around 600fps in glxgears

Cheers
Dale.

look this doc, check out carefully the XF86Config file part.
http://dri.sourceforge.net/doc/DRIuserguide.html

Most likely, dri is enabled, but not accessible to all users.
