|

NO wine, NO emulators. Only games running under pure Linux, with real Linux ports qualify for this list.
Help me fill it out. Focus on commercial / "free commercial" games.
This list at Slashdot seems interesting, too. I don't know all the games on it yet.

5. Adventure games - like Myst (Obsolete category? I wish not.)
Does ScummVM count here?
How about the various well-ported InfoCom interpreters? _________________ .sigs waste space and bandwidth |

| I think you should def make note of the commercial games that are only native to tux through community projects. Wrong to exclude games that work under wine but include games like baldours Gate which only run because of a huge hack made by the community. Wheres the cut-off here? What about aliens vs predator, icciccilus made a hacked version of that that barely works as well, does that count? |

Oh, if Eve Online runs on wine indeed, then it can't be on the list.
Regarding stuff like GemRB and OpenRaider, these belong on the list because those are actual rewrites of their engines (their exes, if you will). Rewrite of game engine for Linux == native Linux port.
Basically, with GemRB, you run gemrb instead of baldur.exe, and it does the same thing but is a native Linux application.
With wine, you run baldur.exe via wine, which is not the same thing.
I have nothing against wine, I just want to see how the list would look if we ignore it for a moment.
Edit: gemrb is definitely not a "hack", it is a proper re-implementation of the Infinity engine (the executable that ran all those games). No hack and no emulator. Scummvm ... according to this:
| Quote: | | ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed! |
it seems that ScummVM is an interpreter, not an emulator. If that is the case, ScummVM falls into the same category as gemrb (engine replacement, where in this case the engine is in fact an interpreter).
Can anyone shed some light on the way ScummVM works? _________________ parallel installation : mercedes with parachute

Quake Live is spelt with 'v'. Also it's free but closed source, so I'd say it's half commercial :p
I'm in the closed beta team to test linux builds and I have to say it works quite well already tough a few bugs remain. |

OK, will correct that. There is a Quake mod called Quake-Life, I always confuse the two |

| It seems to be true that EVE Online uses an integrated version of Transgaming's Cedega (and support was dropped already this year). -> no native Linux game. |

Also, yes, Infocom games count, since there are native Linux ports of their engine / interpreter (no emulator) and the games are apparently just data files which are fed to the engine.

List?
I see the game list will already require a major rewrite and extension |

I think you've pretty much nailed it - an engine replacement. _________________ .sigs waste space and bandwidth |

I checked all the bioware page but couldn't find any linux client for Baldur's Gate. Id they did it as for nwn you would have to buy the Windows version for the data files and then install the linux client, which is offered on their website.
No idea about Icewind Dale or Planescape. |

well, if you're idea is to list commercial games we could buy with in mind a "hey thx for doing it in linux guys! i'll buy it to support your effort"
then: remove baldur's gate & co from the list: they didn't do the port, nor help port their games, and so don't desserve any reward.
same rules goes for ST:Voyager Elite Force (only multiplayer works atm), why ? windows users buy a mono player + multiplayer game and we will only have half the game?
Should get out of the list too
Or if you still think it's ok, you could add (for example) counter strike which provide a native linux client for server only.
edit: Quake 3 Team Arena isn't Q3 Arena, so i suppose it's a valid addition too, in fact no compagny gave a better support to linux than idsoftware ! praise Carmack ! |

| Runesoft ports a lot of games to Linux and if you buy one of those games you pay their effort and have a real native Linux application. Those are mostly application that are not worth much anymore for Windows systems. |

masmullin and disi: You buy the windows version, then install gemrb.
Much similar to games like Quake 4, where you also buy the windows version and then install the linux client.
krinn: No, I simply want a list of commercial-quality games that run natively under Linux. |

Not really.
You buy the windows version, and you install the linux version THEY made: they do the effort of porting it, even they didn't package it with the windows version.
gemrb and scumm... are just port done by linux users, and i didn't check if they get any support by the compagny, but i don't think so (except if you consider not suing someone is a support).
How you would consider openttd that is a port (even better/with more advance options now) of ttd (commercial microprose) ? (and it need music and graphics of the original game to be played). |
