PostPosted: Mon Jul 20, 2009 1:15 am    Post subject: [SOLVED] e2fsprogs blocks util-linux Reply with quote

I have a stable AMD64 with portage 2.1.6.13 and get this error when emerging util-linux:
Code:
ramanujan:/etc/conf.d# emerge -uDp util-linux
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild     U ] sys-apps/util-linux-2.16 [2.15.1]
[uninstall    ] sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.3-r1
[blocks b     ] <sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.8 ("<sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.8" is blocking sys-apps/util-linux-2.16)
[blocks B     ] <sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41.8 ("<sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41.8" is blocking sys-apps/util-linux-2.16)

 * Error: The above package list contains packages which cannot be
 * installed at the same time on the same system.

  ('ebuild', '/', 'sys-apps/util-linux-2.16', 'merge') pulled in by
    util-linux

  ('installed', '/', 'sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41.3-r1', 'nomerge') pulled in by
    sys-fs/e2fsprogs required by world

How do I resolve this? Thanks.

Please post the output of emerge --info, and also please try doing another --sync.

I synced just before the emerge and synced again with the same result immediately afterward.

Try 'emerge -1pv util-linux e2fsprogs' instead.
The block are because now util-linux will be providing
libuuid and libblkid, that were provided by e2fsprogs-libs before.

upgrading to util-linux-2.16 allows
e2fsprogs-libs-1.14.8 to compile/link properly, but
e2fsprogs-1.14.8 still craps out:
Code:

 * ERROR: sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41.8 failed.
 * Call stack:
 *               ebuild.sh, line   49:  Called src_install
 *             environment, line 2584:  Called gen_usr_ldscript '-a' 'e2p' 'ext2fs'
 *             environment, line 1518:  Called die
 * The specific snippet of code:
 *                       [[ -z ${tlib} ]] && die "unable to read SONAME from ${lib}";
 *  The die message:
 *   unable to read SONAME from libe2p.so
 *
 * If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant.
 * A complete build log is located at '/home/tmp/portage/sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41.8/temp/build.log'.
 * The ebuild environment file is located at '/home/tmp/portage/sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41.8/temp/environment'.

any idea?

EDIT: re-ran emerge --sync and emerge e2fsprogs.
works fine now, wonder what went on there.

Here's what I get:
Code:
# emerge -1pv util-linux e2fsprogs

    util-linux

  ('ebuild', '/', 'sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41.3-r1', 'merge') pulled in by
    e2fsprogs

In an older thread, http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-712898.html, something like
Code:
# emerge -f e2fsprogs e2fsprogs-libs util-linux
# emerge --unmerge e2fsprogs e2fsprogs-libs util-linux
# emerge e2fsprogs e2fsprogs-libs util-linux

is suggested.

Will that work? Is it safe to unmerge e2fsprogs, e2fsprogs-lib, and util-linux?

Not sure if there's a better way, but yes, that's what I just ended up doing. (fetch, unmerge, merge new).

I would make sure to also still have the old e2fsprogs and e2fsprogs-libs tar.gz's fetched in /usr/portage/distfiles, too, so you can re-emerge them if needed. Version 1.3 of the e2fsprogs-1.41.8 ebuild did not work for me, so if needed re-sync so you're using >= Version-1.4 of e2fsprogs-1.41.8.ebuild.

Then perhaps 'emerge -1pv util-linux e2fsprogs e2fsprogs-libs' will work.
I can't really tell, cause I did that upgrade while it was still masked.

I used quickpkg to save e2fsprogs, e2fsprogs-libs, and util-linux and fetched and unmerged. I could then emerge util-linux-2.16 but not the other two so I re-emerged the binary, saved, copies of e2fsprogs, e2fsprogs-libs, and util-linux. I seem to be in dependency hell. Here's my current 'emerge -uDp world' problem immediately following a sync:
Code:
[blocks B     ] <sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41.8 ("<sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41.8" is blocking sys-apps/util-linux-2.16)
[blocks B     ] <sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.8 ("<sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.8" is blocking sys-apps/util-linux-2.16)

 * Error: The above package list contains packages which cannot be

    >=sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs-1.41 required by ('installed', '/', 'sys-fs/cryptsetup-1.0.6-r2', 'nomerge')
    sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs required by world
    sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs required by ('installed', '/', 'x11-libs/libSM-1.1.0', 'nomerge')
    (and 1 more)

  ('ebuild', '/', 'sys-apps/util-linux-2.16', 'merge') pulled in by
    sys-apps/util-linux required by world
    >=sys-apps/util-linux-2.13 required by ('ebuild', '/', 'sys-power/pm-utils-1.2.5', 'merge')
    >=sys-apps/util-linux-2.13 required by ('installed', '/', 'sys-apps/hal-0.5.11-r9', 'nomerge')
    (and 1 more)

  ('installed', '/', 'sys-fs/e2fsprogs-1.41.3-r1', 'nomerge') pulled in by
    sys-fs/e2fsprogs required by world

I would be grateful for any pointers.

I run:
Code:
emerge --unmerge e2fsprogs e2fsprogs-libs util-linux

I know this will break my system, but i removed this packages anyway. And indeed my system was broken!

With a LiveCD I try to remerge e2fsprogs and Co but I get still the blocking error.
I recognize that I didn't unmask e2fsprogs-1.41.8 and e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.8. After I change that, i was able to install e2fsprogs-libs. util-linux failed with the "loop-aes" flag (can not apply the patch). I disabled it for util-linux. Finally i could install util-linux and e2fsprogs. Currently I'm back in my system and it works fine.

Note that order matters.

When I tried to cut and paste some of the commands given in this thread, they all failed because libuuid was missing. (I had already unmerged e2fsprogs e2fsprogs-libs and util-linux )

To get them to successfully emerge again, I had to do this:

Code:
emerge util-linux e2fsprogs

You don't have to specify e2fsprogs-libs, it gets pulled in by e2fsprogs.

Again, order matters. util-linux needs to be first.

Thanks. That works. Here's what I did.

1. Unmasked e2fsprogs and e2fsprogs-libs in /etc/portage/package.keywords. (I think I only needed e2fsprogs, however.)
2. Emerged e2fsprogs which brought in util-linux-2.16 as a dependency

Then 'emerge world' worked.

When I try to emerge util-linux I get this error:

Code:

/var/tmp/portage/sys-apps/util-linux-2.16/temp/util-linux-ng-2.15-20090511.diff-19826.out
begins with this (I can post more if necessary):

Code:

Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option?

:( real nice screwed up system now

You most likely have the loop-aes USE flag. You'll have to wait to install 2.16 until a patch is made for loop-aes support.

Thanks Nerevar, that was it. Disabling loop-aes appears to
have worked ... (util-linux was the only package that had
that use flag and I have no idea how it got into my make.conf)

FWIW, I'm not sure why, but all I had to do was
Code:
emerge e2fsprogs

(without unmerging anything first). And it fixed my blocks. Weird.

Hi.

The only thing I had to do was using the stable sys-fs/udev version.
So I took it off my package.keywords and everything went fine for
me.

Here's what I did:

To be safe -

quickpkg e2fsprogs
quickpkg e2fsprogs-libs
quickpkg util-linux
emerge -NuDav --fetchonly util-linux e2fsprogs e2fsprogs-libs

Then -

emerge -C e2fsprogs e2fsprogs-libs && emerge -NuDv --nodeps util-linux e2fsprogs-libs e2fsprogs

Seems to have worked, no issues as far as I know. I wish I could profess to some special insight or knowledge but I just duplicated what I did on another system for the "e2fsprogs, com_err, and ss blockers" as documented in a sticky post in this forum.

I recognize that I didn't unmask e2fsprogs-1.41.8 and e2fsprogs-libs-1.41.8.

Thanks. That works. Here's what I did.

1. Unmasked e2fsprogs and e2fsprogs-libs in /etc/portage/package.keywords. (I think I only needed e2fsprogs, however.)
2. Emerged e2fsprogs which brought in util-linux-2.16 as a dependency

Then 'emerge world' worked.

hey thanks that worked for me !!

I run:
Code:
emerge --unmerge e2fsprogs e2fsprogs-libs util-linux

I know this will break my system, but i removed this packages anyway. And indeed my system was broken!

Here's what I did:

To be safe -

quickpkg e2fsprogs
quickpkg e2fsprogs-libs
quickpkg util-linux
emerge -NuDav --fetchonly util-linux e2fsprogs e2fsprogs-libs

Then -

emerge -C e2fsprogs e2fsprogs-libs && emerge -NuDv --nodeps util-linux e2fsprogs-libs e2fsprogs

Seems to have worked, no issues as far as I know. I wish I could profess to some special insight or knowledge but I just duplicated what I did on another system for the "e2fsprogs, com_err, and ss blockers" as documented in a sticky post in this forum.

I followed these instructions to the letter and got the following error:

Code:

...and that was your mistake.
What would probably work, was:
'emerge -uDp util-linux e2fsprogs'.
That way, old e2fsprobgs-libs would be uninstalled before
installing the new version - due to certain changes, that required in this case.
Try unmerging sys-libs/e2fsprogs-libs and reemerging them immediately afterwards
(with '-1', of course), just make sure none of the files belonging now to util-linux gets unmerged.

And just why does it emerge 1.41.3 instead of 1.41.8 ?
