|
|
I have a sunfire v100 and it is very slow over the network, so I suspect that full duplex is not enabled.
I have the tulip driver compiled in the kernel, but in dmesg it says it is a davicom.
tulip0: Old style EEPROM with no media selection information.
tulip0: MII transceiver #1 config 1000 status 782d advertising 01e1.
eth0: Davicom DM9102/DM9102A rev 49 at 0x1fe02010100, EEPROM not present, 00:03:BA:19:22:5A, IRQ 6961856.
there is a davicom entry in the kernel, should I be using that instead of the tulip driver. |

Yes, an 85MHz Sparc is slower than a 550MHz PIII. Also, carrots are orange. |

sparc is slower than my dual xeon 3gig processor. I compiled my sparc 64 bit kernel with -OPTMIZE flag and it still runs slower. It is a Ultra 10 333mhz. Please advise. |

first off the v100 is 550 - 650mzh depending on model.
Secondly the PIII 550 was just as slow transfering files unitl the NIC was forced into full duplex mode.
All I want to know is how to force full duplex for the tulip driver.

for sunfire v100 compile the tulip driver as a module, then in modules.autoload add:
tulip options=5
reboot and the nic is forced into 100tx full duplex.
My files tranfer speeds went from 96k per second to 1044k per second.
Now that's a big difference.

In case this might help someone else here are the options you can pass to tulip.o
i.e.
tulip options=5 (this would enable 100basetx Full Duplex)
If you had two nics you would do:
tulip options=5,5
see below for all options
0 Auto-select (default to the 10baseT link)
1 10base2
2 AUI
3 100baseTx
4 10baseT-FD
5 100baseTx-FD
6 100baseT4
7 100baseFx
8 100baseFx-FD
9 MII 10baseT
10 MII 10baseT-FD
11 MII (autoselect)
12 10baseT (no autoselect), v0.69 and later only
13 MII 100baseTx
14 MII 100baseTx-FD
15 MII 100baseT4 |

If you don't feel like recompiling the driver, try "emerge ethtool" -- it'll let you change network card settings on the fly, and I use it to force my Ultra5/10's HappyMeal cards to talk full duplex to Cisco switches. |
