I have been having problems with quake 3 locking up.
First I'll give you my system specs.
AMD athlon tbird 1.2 gig (100mhz FSB)
Asus A7V (KT133)
256 Meg PC133 CL2
Sound Blaster Live Value
Diamond V770 Ultra (Nvidia TNT 2 ultra)
RTL 8139 nic it's a dlink
Adaptec 2930CU

system using gentoo kernel 2.4.19-r7 right now with premptive patch but I had the problem as well with the vanilla kernel 2.4.18
I am using kernel drivers for sound, but also had the same problem with alsa
I am using the lastest version of nvidia drivers and glx from portage. The system in it's current state was built last thursday so it's pretty much up to date.
basicaly q3 runs pretty good at 8x6 sound works i can play an mp3 while gaming but after a while of playing the game will just freeze and loop 1 second of audio. i can't ctrl+alt+F1 outa x I can't turn num lock on or off. I have to manualy power cycle the machine to get out. I suspect this might be the amd nvidia bug referenced on the main page. but I have a few freinds with similar systems who dont' have this problem. Anybody have any insights or sugestions to what i might try to fix this problem?

I think you should just give up man. Kidding (he's a friend of mine). Could be your video card man. Have you tried playing without sound? Just configure quake3 to point to a null audio device so that you get no sound at all and see what happens. The game should still run fine and my not lock up on you then. Remember I said thats what I do so that I can listen to mp3's while playing.

try setting your cg_hunkmegs a bit higher as well, i think the ratio is say you have 512mb , set your hunkmegs to 128 =?

but there are tons of console commands in quake you can set to tweak your game.

if that doesnt work, try using the quake3 point release portage from gentoo, app-games/quake3 i think, if you did try vice versa, goto idsoftware.com and get their patch, i in turn used the patch from idsoftware with gentoo before they had a ebuild out and everything worked fine.

as far as using portage for mods such as osp or cpma, all you are basically doing is extracting .pk3 files and putting them in /quake3/osp, /cpma etc, so if you have time to diagnos these problems you can always download the zip patches from the respective mod websites.

no biggie :)

lemme know how it goes

This may seem a little bit obvious but is your system overheating. Most of the problems i've experienced that are extremely bizarre are when teh system overheats.

I have a swiftech MCX370 which is a fairly good heat sink. So I don't think it's overheating but I suppose it's possible. I have also encountered this problem with UT. I wonder if it's an AGP problem.

I turned off agp using option "nvagp" "0" in my xf86config file. I haven't had it lock up yet but it was fairly intermitant I'll let you know if it still locks up.
