i seem to not have found it in the gentoo portage tree, i wonder why its not in there...
i found i build through this link:http://gentoo-overlays.zugaina.org/steev/
but havent tried it yet. though i wonder is there any specific reason for it to not be included in the main ~x86 arch tree ?

this seems to be a very promising CM so its a good idea to have it in portage.

cheers 8)

From what I hear, Gentoo's a little short on manpower.

it's a pity,

@gforum:

if you'd really like to see an ebuild, try if you can find someone for the sunrise overlay

I just took the ebuild from that overlay and merged into my local repo.
This actually works really well EXCEPT I use openbox and this messes with the wallpaper :(

i gave it a try too,and even recompiled everything with the use flag glitz.
with the xrender option it was simple heaven, but with glitz-opengl it was sluggish and buggy, as you seem o have noticed.
overall it was ok, i tried running AWN after that but awn has some issue with displaying svgs on my machine to the icons are weird, and without glitz forget about 3d effects...

(i use openbox too)

its a nice piece of software none the less, and with time it might fill our gap for 3d FX under a simple WM environment.

cheers.

are you using the latest glitz? the one in portage is behind by one version from the one ccm needs.
I do like it, but I am having an issue with conky "transparency" and how ccm then renders the wallpaper

yes i was using portage ~arch version...

anyways, about conky... inst there a fix to avoid such issues with conky and xcompmgr?
probably if you use the same solution it will work for cairo-compmgr too...
i think its a conky issue first and cairo second... but its been a while since i checked that

btw, on a side note, i tried creating a bugzilla acc to suggest this package, but it hasn't sent me a registration email yet...
if you have an account please file a request for us all. ;)

i would also recommend searching in the ubuntu forums, for an answer to your issue, i saw a lot of people there with comments over cairo-compmgr, and quite a few workarounds, but maybe that was for older versions. still its worth the try.

thanks for so many replies guys, i love the gentoo community!

cheers 8)

edit: btw, with me i only tested xrender, and haven't noticed any issues, but i dont even have a wallpaper set yet, so... :p

Ahh yer glitz backend is laggy and crashes for me using the portage version of glitz
I was going to sort out the ebuild as well as bump glitz to sort this

Funny thing is conky+xcompmgr there is no issue???
What it might be though is downto how ccm deals with wallpaper (you have to state your wallpaper in the config file) I was going to play a bit more tonight

Will do. Once I have sorted the ebuild and the glitz ebuild ill submit them to bugzy and link the bug here. It is a good package and would be great to be in the tree

I just tried this, xrender backend works really good, glitz backend is buggy and I don't like when something messes with my mplayer -vo xv ;) I tried a combinations with glitz from portage, glitz from authors git repository, with app version 0.2.93 and with live version from git (now 0.2.94). After new version of glitz I recompiled cairo (on my sys only app that use glitz flag) but with no success.
When I change backend to opengl when the app is started I get a lot of errors about libgobject in terminal, my tv with mplayer is choppy and when I leave opengl enabled, quit app and start again then I get segfault.
I use gnome with openbox, wallpaper is fine here, but gnome doesn't use root window for this I think. I am posting ebuild for live version, someone maybe wants to try. I enabled glitz-tfp also, and try with that too but it is the same :( What is actually the difference between them?
Also, in zugaina overlay ebuild is in x11-wm but right place is x11-misc like xcompmgr.

edit:
configure option --disable-schemas-install doesn't work, I use gnome but very stripped down version and when something can go in ~/.config I usually prefer that but they are installed anyway :(

copy and pasting that ebuild really confused my pc, what kind of control chars do you use for spacing :(

edit: improved ebuild, eautoreconf instead of autogen.sh, econf in proper phase. also the glitz dep is for >=0.5.7. the glitz code is strangely based on ancient glitz api from 2004 so doesn't build at all... :/

I just tried justinkb's ebuild and it's working great with both the xrender and glitz backends. I just used glitz from portage and it was fine. The only problem I have is once in a while when I close a window, cairo-compmgr will crash (same with xrender or glitz). Anyone else get this?

Code:
21.757446: cairo-compmgr(ccm_log_print_backtrace+0x17) [0x4134b7]
21.757474: cairo-compmgr [0x42da03]
21.757481: /lib/libc.so.6 [0x7f9a8fd8b490]
21.757487: /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2(cairo_set_operator+0x4) [0x7f9a93767104]
21.757493: /usr/lib64/cairo-compmgr/libccm_shadow.so [0x7f9a8cc29cfa]
21.757499: /usr/lib64/cairo-compmgr/libccm_shadow.so [0x7f9a8cc2a268]
21.757505: cairo-compmgr(ccm_window_get_pixmap+0x69) [0x41c979]
21.757512: cairo-compmgr(ccm_window_paint+0xa8) [0x41cae8]
21.757517: cairo-compmgr [0x4271b6]
21.757523: /usr/lib64/cairo-compmgr/libccm_snapshot.so [0x7f9a8ca2128c]

EDIT: I got rid of the crashes by disabling shadows by removing /usr/lib64/cairo-compmgr/libccm_shadow* (Disabling them in gconf-editor in didn't work for some reason)

So far, what's the advantage of this over xcompmgr? Is it at least any less buggy?

Well I never had any problems with xcompmgr, so I can't really say if it's any less buggy. Cairo does have a lot more plugins, so it is a bit prettier. I'm really liking the menu animations/transparency. :)

I've also found 3d performance to be much better. xcompmgr used to cost me about 30-50% in glxgears and games over no compositor. With cairo-compmgr, I'm basically seeing full performance. I was just playing some openarena on one monitor of my dual-head setup with a fully composited desktop on the other, and getting 50-60fps on crappy Intel 945GME integrated graphics. 8)

xcompmgr is just for transparancy. If that is all you need that is great

CCM does transparancy, menu animation, window-decoration (transparent WM...) ALT-Tab effects, zoom

its a kind of halfway house between Xcompmgr and Compiz (which is handy if you use *box and don't want a replacement window manager)

I use CCM daily now, it is buggy (the shadow effect *WILL* crash CCM, and if you disable it you cannot access options with turning off composite [ccm comes with a nice systray to simplify this])

saying that tho, it is great!

Translated to my language, that means that it's even buggier than xcompmgr

I've tried it, for some reason glitz doesn't get enabled, I can see it disabled at configure time (yep, the use flag is set). With XRENDER this is ridiculously slow. When I tried to kill it everything stopped responding and I had to use sysrq to umount and reboot. Not willing to try once more for now. :p

Umm yer... I have been playing around with the ebuild and the actual --enable-glitz has to be done at the autotool stage (for some /really/ strange reason). Its buggy anyway and crashes all the time

XRENDER is actually really smooth for me here, I keep poking it every now and again, trying to figure out what GLITZ package, what cairo package (and what patchset... the dev aint really docu'ed too well how 3rd party can build this...). No commits to the git repo since 4th April mind

Looks like work has picked up again in the cairo-compmgr git. Since a little work has been done to the glitz backend, I tried building it with glitz-0.5.7, but got this error:

Code:
CC    ccm-pixmap-glitz.o

ccm-pixmap-glitz.c: In function 'ccm_pixmap_glitz_create_gl_drawable':
ccm-pixmap-glitz.c:152: error: 'glitz_drawable_format_t' has no member named 'scanline_order'
make[3]: *** [ccm-pixmap-glitz.o] Error 1
make[2]: *** [all] Error 2
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make: *** [all] Error 2
/usr/libexec/paludis/utils/emake: emake returned error 2

Anyone able to successfully build the glitz backend? Xrender is working very nicely, but I'd like to use glitz so that I can use the VSYNC option and get tear-free composited video.

This is a little bit off-topic, but the recent nvidia-drivers have had an issue with glitz. It was fine till 177 series, but with 180 series, some gtk applications segfaulted and failed to start, like firefox-trunk (minefield 64-bit binary), gnome-bluetooth etc. Strangely, I realized from my Ubuntu system, where these crashes didn't happen, that there was no glitz installed. So I re-emerged my entire gentoo system (revdep-rebuild) with USE=-glitz and all is fine. I manually edited the compiz ebuild to remove the glitz dependency and few other ones. I now have a completely glitz-free system and all is good. Compiz works just fine too without glitz. So I wonder from this thread that is glitz really required?

Aside, I have been very impressed by the compositing effects in KDE-4.2. Very well integrated, no bugs or glitches (to my eyes), smooth and light (ok, I have a Nvidia 9800M GS :p, but also on my 8400M GS) and much more subtle/aesthetic than compiz - doesn't distract or come in your way (just like Apple advertises about its Mac OS X).

in fact this has been happening since 180.29 for me, for others the whole 180.xx and 185.xx series is royally flawed in this regard,

glitz hasn't been updated or maintained since years (2006) so if another package depends on this outdated and buggy piece of code I'll call that outdated and buggy, too :P

if you need nice desktop effects just use kde4, compiz or xfwm4 - if you can't get the others to work without glitz

try it -
Just do it

just a reminder:

glitz isn't the only problem the new nvidia-drivers are causing: pie binaries "aren't allowed", too

because of that I had to partly disable hardened and set it up manually & re-emerge whole world

proprietary drivers rock

Well, as I mentioned, I am running completely glitz-free without any issues. What I was curious is that if it provides any additional functionality or is needed for other xorg drivers etc ;).

Thankfully, I am not using pie or hardened gentoo (for now that is, unless my evil eyes land on it sometime in future - as not so long ago I moved from x86 to amd64 ).

Aside, I don't use any desktop-effects :D. Very happy with plain simple gnome and Nodoka theme from Fedora.

PS: No intention of hijacking this thread ;).

This is bug 271775. As I already told the person working on getting this into Sunrise overlay: once the ebuild is in shape and the app works reasonably well, I am willing to commit this to portage.

This is bug 271775. As I already told the person working on getting this into Sunrise overlay: once the ebuild is in shape and the app works reasonably well, I am willing to commit this to portage.

for reasons of life im using ubuntu atm, cairo compmgr works flawlessly here, no bug whatsoever...
(using cairo's page build of course)

and about the background being black, you set ur background picture in the configuration file /home/userNameHere/.config/cairo-compmgr/ccm-screen-0.conf , in the option background.

not sure if u got this answer, but this fixes 'blackscreen'.

and as i've said, cairo for me is heaven, flawless, works with anything you throw at it... just everything i'd wish for.
(and hope it improves over time ^^)

cheers
