Maybe I missed it, but what is the trick to get icons to show up properly? I cleared out my old config entirely but I still have mostly broken images for the menu icons. |

4.6.0 didn't really come with a complete icon set (over looked, apparently :/). If you installed Rodent it will inherit Tango, Gnome or Industrial icon themes if installed. You can also get other Icon themes from http://xfce-look.org
I think this was mentioned early in the thread too, alot of folks just install tango and be done! |

I'm running ~x86 and have just updated to 4.6.1
I don't see any real difference or improvement. No whoot , wahoo here.
What I did get was a clunky ugly look , missing icons and damn slow window redrawing (about 1.5s !!).
I solved most of those breakages by masking xfdesktop-4.6* and upgrading to 4.4
I now have xfce4 almost as good as it was before the update.
The one remaining issue is that most of the time new windows come up behind current windows not in front. If I click on a link in thunderbird it starts firefox hidden behind. If I start a terminal from the main panel I dont see it until I go and find it.
Anyone else seeing this or any suggestions on a work around?

|
|
Hi!
I have updated my xfce 4.4 to 4.6.1 and I have a problem with icons. First, I have done this before update:
I have added the following lines to my /etc/portage/package.keywords
Code: | xfce-base/xfce4 ~* *
xfce-base/xfce4-settings ~* *
xfce-base/xfce4-panel ~* *
x11-themes/gtk-engines-xfce ~* *
x11-themes/xfwm4-themes ~* *
xfce-extra/xfce4-appfinder ~* *
net-print/xfprint ~* *
xfce-base/thunar ~* *
xfce-base/xfce4-session ~* *
xfce-base/xfdesktop ~* *
app-office/orage ~* *
xfce-base/xfwm4 ~* *
xfce-base/xfce-utils ~* *
xfce-extra/xfce4-mixer ~* *
xfce-base/libxfce4util ~* *
xfce-base/libxfcegui4 ~* *
xfce-base/xfconf ~* *
xfce-base/libxfce4menu ~* *
xfce-extra/exo ~* *
|
Then, I have done an "emerge --deep --update --newuse world"
When finished, I have restart the X server and I have logged into my new xfce 4.6.1 and I have missing icons. See the images:
http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/6020/xfce461.png
Any suggestion? Thanks in advance |

You could always disable menu icons oh just one more thing you don't need to spec all that into package.keywords just simply stick in the package cat and package name instead so just xfce-base/xfce4-settings into package.keywords for example. _________________ Asus P6X58D-E Mobo

Read the whole thread before posting questions, this one has been answered more then once in just this thread
Gentree;
4.6.1 isn't about rolling out new woohoo features, its a bugfix release (hence the 4.6.1 and not 4.8 :p). As for focusing, look at some of the prefs... Settings-> Window Manager Tweaks, poke over all these as there might be something you want enabled/disabled. There are more settings under Settings-> Window Manager-> Focus too |

Ok. Sorry.
I have fixed the problem installing gentoo-icons.
Well, another question. It's possible to add the feature of "Switch user" at the logout dialog? Ubuntu has a patch for doing that. And Mandriva too.
It's possible to add this patch to the xfce ebuild to have this feature in our Gentoo xfce? |

I'm totally agree with you.
I don't knew that this feature need to convert xfce into a gnome-light
I use xdm (not gdm) because I don't want anything of gnome. In fact, I have -gnome in my use variable, and -kde -qt -qt4 and more...
I hope the XFCE team add this feature and can be used in all display managers (xdm, gdm, kdm...)
Thanks for your answer. |

You could also use Qingy I use it with Xfce4
This is a graphical login using framebuffer (no X) as replacement of agetty. You can logon and choose sessions from /etc/X11/Sessions or console. |

When it is ready, as usual. Use the unstable ebuilds in the meanwhile, if you are tempted to do so. _________________ "I'm just very selective about the reality I choose to accept." -- Calvin |

What do you mean with that? emerge is giving me the following:
Quote: | emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "gentoo-icons". |

Well I have a question regarding the update.
I have xfce-base/xfce4-extras-4.4.2 installed. Well it is only a meta package but should it be updated (renamed) anyway? |

Meh, was so excited to have 4.6.1 stable I decided it was finally a good time to rebuild the PC. Well, fresh install with 4.6.1 comes with like 2 working icons ( exaggeration ). |

I really dislike kde4 (tested on a second PC with Kubuntu). I have switched it and my Gentoo PC to xfce. And masked KDE4 (kinda Vista virus).
This week, I have updated world. I think I am going to downgrade to xfce-4.4. I don't understand why xfce-4.6 is not still masked with these panels issues.
EDIT 2009-08-28 : running xfce4-panel have restored my panels. The problem still arises sometimes and looks like to be caused by a panel plugin.

I'm currently testing Kde 4.2.4-r3 at work on my ~amd64 laptop.
Right now, is running, but monday I will test it from A to Z.
It's not bad as it was with Kde 4.0 or 4.1.
I don't use any overlay right now. |

Anyone seeing slow redrawing I reported?
I held off a while thinking an update would clear it or some other package rebuild would fix it but no luck. I just unmasked xfdesktop-4.6.1 and rebuilt it but it's just as before. Swapping desktops takes 1.5s and pushes my cpu to around 50%. Ah well back to 4.4
Another bug , not cleared by retrofitting xfdesktop is that new windows don't come up in front. Not a major issue but very annoying.

apparently the fact that new windows are always created hidden behind everything else is not a bug it's feature !!
For those of us who open new windows to see them, rather than hide them, another gentoo user has posted a ebuild to restore the old sane behaviour.
http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5479
It seems that the flaws in the new z-ordering have been recognised and a change is in the pipeline. However, I am mightily releaved to see windows coming up properly and I guess most ppl using xfce will be glad of this fix.
