Does anyone else get this compile error? I'm wracking my brain getting it to compile. All the preceding modules needed compiled clean.

I **NEED** metisse! I can't go a day without twirling a window!

Does anyone still use metisse???
I was wondering it because I installed it and have a couple of questions:

1. Some of the key bindings on the official website aren't working for me (or I'm missing something):
e.g.: when I type <CTRL>+<SHIFT>+T in a window (Firefox for example) or on the border of it, it takes the window keybind and not the metisse one (it should increase the transparency). Am I missing something?
2. I'm using taviso's config for FVWM (adapted to my needs) and I'd like to keep it with metisse. Any chance to do that without filling in all the config files in .fvwm-metisse? :p I saw on his personnal page on Gentoo that he was also using metisse at some point. Any chance to find a trace of his configs? I searched here on the Gentoo forums and FVWM ones but no success :(
3. When I start metisse, I lose Direct Rendering (from glxinfo) 8O
Code:
name of display: 127.0.0.1:1.0
display: 127.0.0.1:1  screen: 0
direct rendering: No

Thanks in advance.

Metisse is still alive:
http://insitu.lri.fr/metisse/

And mandriva will include it, Is there any overlay with ebuilds for installing it?

Thanks for information

Itr seems that the matisse and nucleo ebuilds were removed from portage in November or so (I googled for info and found a newsletter from back then which said so).

I've only heard about metisse now, and I have downloaded the Mandriva CD. It would be nice to have this as an alternative desktop in my Gentoo, too. I have downloaded the nucleo and metisse sources, but nucleo won't compile. It first threw out a qt error, saying that some moc was too new, but disabling qt is an option. However, now the make process ends with:

Code:

/home/bitpicker/Install/nucleo-0.6/apps/videoServer/VideoServer.cxx:39: undefined reference to `nucleo::DNSServiceAnnouncer::~DNSServiceAnnouncer()'
/home/bitpicker/Install/nucleo-0.6/apps/videoServer/VideoServer.cxx:39: undefined reference to `nucleo::DNSServiceAnnouncer::~DNSServiceAnnouncer()'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[2]: *** [videoServer] Fehler 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/bitpicker/Install/nucleo-0.6/apps/videoServer'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Fehler 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/bitpicker/Install/nucleo-0.6/apps'
make: *** [all-recursive] Fehler 1

A number of other undefined references to the same thing precede this. Any hints on what that DNSServiceAnnouncer might be and where it is found?

I had to install net-misc/mDNSResponder to get nucleo compiled ...

HTH
swimmer

PS: Because I'm running AMD64 I had to apply those patches as well ...

PPS: Now I have to see whether Metisse compiles as well :)

I think that could be nice open a new forum thread dedicated to make ebuilds and find patches for install Metisse in Gentoo..., I don't know many about doing ebuilds, but I could be a tester ;-)

If anybody opens a forum thread with this topic, please, post the link in this thread (I am spanish and I usually am reading Spanish Forum)

Thanks :-)

@ swimmer: thanks for the hint, I wasn't aware of that package. I have installed it and nucleo is compiling at the moment.

That ebuild is too late, I compiled it by hand. It works beautifully inside XFce4 (taking up one virtual desktop) and as a standalone GUI. The FVWM is going to need some serious tweaking before I really like it, but the Metisse features seem to be a little more geared towards productive use than in Beryl or Looking Glass, as far as I am concerned. Especially the fact that angled windows remain usable is great. I'm thinking of terminals compiling something which I want to keep an eye on, sitting almost at right angles to me near the side of the desktop while I'm working with a larger application taking up the rest of the screen.

Screenshots are no problem with Gimp, at least if Gimp is running in the underlying GUI; I started it in XFce, set it to make a snapshot after ten seconds, went over to the virtual desktop where Metisse was running and the shot was made.

I get a blocked package when trying to emerge metisse.
Code:
# emerge -vp metisse

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[blocks B     ] x11-wm/metisse (is blocking x11-wm/fvwm-20070205)
[ebuild  N    ] net-misc/mDNSResponder-98  1,338 kB
[ebuild  N    ] media-libs/nucleo-0.6  781 kB [8]
[ebuild  N    ] x11-wm/metisse-0.4.0_rc4  5,877 kB [8]
Is it normal as fvwm is blocking metisse?

Another question. Will fvwm-crystal work with metisse?

I can't speak for how Gentoo packages its applications, but FVWM and Metisse can quite happily co-exist on the same machine.

Dominique_71 wrote:

With some work, yes. As I keep trying to tell everybody, FVWM-Crystal is just a set of configuration scripts that FVWM reads. "Porting" these to Metisse wouldn't be too difficult at all.

Basically, gentoo doesn't manage where the applications reside, with a few exceptions as binary only softwares in /opt. /usr is used as prefix for almost anything else. In this case, it implies at when installing both fvwm and metisse, the files in /usr/bin will be the files from the last installed. I think at it is why they are blocking each other.

I try to install metisse by hand in /usr/local, but it doesn't seam to work. I changed /etc/X11/Sessions/fvwm-crystal into
Code:
#!/bin/sh
/usr/local/bin/Xwnc -ac -geometry 1600x1200 :1 &
/usr/local/bin/metisse-start-fvwm -wd :1
but it doesn't worked. Crystal started just fine, but I gdon't get the ~/.fvwm-metisse directory and it was using FvwmCommand in /usr/bin. I think at it is a problem with my path variable.

No matter. I uninstalled fvwm and merged metisse. Crystal crashed. I done a symlink fvwm2 -> fvwmi in /usr/bin. Crystal start but I get only the crystal mouse bindings. No one single metisse feature is working and I don't have the time to investigate why. Maybe later, but I don't think so.

I get metisse to work with startx. But it doesn't do what can be for me the only thing that could made me switch tp another wm. I can zoom out but not zoom in. What will be interesting to me as I run my screen at 1600x1280, is a wm that can zoom in a program, inclusive the pixmaps, the menus, the text and the window. I don't care about zooming the whole desktop but only a few programs as nedit. And beryl and co don't work with fvwm.

I tried it, but on a 2.5 MHz Athlon-xp laptop without direct rendering it's dog slow. Do I have to compile nucleo or metisse with some particular option or does it actually need 3D and a recent computer, contrary to what the Metisse guys say?

edit: ok I confused the meaning. They don't mean you can run it normally on sofware, it does need OpenGL; just very little of it, so it runs on any card, but it must be a 3D accelerated card.

reup: Metisse has been removed from portage several months ago. If you want to emerge it you need to get custom ebuilds. There is a link to an overlay in the wiki page you mentioned, though I don't know if it's still active.

Is there anyone left using metisse on Gentoo?
I wanted to give it a try but it's been removed from portage as I read in the thread (any reason why?).
Is the project still alive - is it worth rying to buid it myself?

Is there anyone left using metisse on Gentoo?
I wanted to give it a try but it's been removed from portage as I read in the thread (any reason why?).
Is the project still alive - is it worth rying to buid it myself?

You can always visit the Gentoo Attic for old ebuilds...

I'd say that metisse is a one person project for one person, even if you go upstream the activity of the project is the closest you get get to absolute zero. Even in the times when actually four of five persons around the world used it, it improved very slowly if at all.

It doesn't keep up with fvwm either, and there's nothing about it in the recent fvwm mailing (only a few from around 2004), which would be the way to go if this project wanted to survive/there was any interest in it at all. Still, you can compile it by hand or rescue one of the old ebuilds, they should probably work with few or no modifications because metisse hasn't changed much.

The project isn't updated anymore. It's still functional though, but in terms of support... forget it.
