I've got a weird error and am not sure exactly when it started. I upgraded some programs on my system using emerge -uavD world, and now bash completion for filenames is putting a trailing slash on everything.

So if I have a file ~/testfile and type in:

# > vim test<tab>

it completes like this:

# > vim testfile/

And when vim opens I get an Illegal File Name error. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I've been searching everywhere for an answer to this, as it's really annoying. Everywhere that I search seems to involve bash-completion for various other programs... no one seems to be having an issue with just the basic filename completion.

Does anyone have any help?? Or at least someplace that I can start looking?

Take a look at this and see if it's what's happening to you:

What version of bash do you have?

BTW: google for "bash tab slash" returned quite a number of hits regarding this problem.
