I went to the mirror (http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo/releases/build/1.2/) to grab files and I'm not sure which to grab... I'm going to be running on a Pentium2 350MHz or 400MHz box.
Do I grab i686 or ix86.
Which set of files do I get, gentoo or stage1?
Sorry for the n00b questions but it's kind of confusing. _________________ Iain

The Pentium 2 is a 686 processor. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

If you have a i686 or better processor (pentium pro or newer), you can use the i686 iso. However, even if you have a newer computer, you can still use the ix86 if you want to. On the iso there is a tarball (or 3 on the i686 iso) which contains the base system to get you started in the installation. The stage1 tarball is to start completely from scratch. Stage2 starts with the bootstrap all the way done (compiling your compiler, binutils, etc.). Stage3 has the base system already compiled. So, you can use stage1 if you want to configure everything, or stage2 or stage3 if you want to save some time and use a more default configuration.
You'll want to read through the install instructions before deciding which stage to use and before you try to get started on the install. |
