I emerge vi and it's sucessful, but when I run vi I get a segmentation fault.

Had the same problem on 1 system; I'm using vim instead.

:). Yeah eventually plan on using it, but I haven't got X on here and apparantly X is one of the dependancies for vim.

emerge nvi, gets an rudimentry vi without X (which is what I want at this time)

It is due to term settings. See thread below:

You can emerge vim without X by doing:

export USE="-X -gtk -gnome -python"; emerge vim

or

emerge --nodeps vim
